H/t to @QuietRadioOperator, who has found that it’s a kind of ‘kerf starter’ saw.

First I’ve heard of one.

Curious saw. Back third of the plate has no teeth.

Still putting the multipoint lock replacement off (no locksmiths have been available).

I'm 90% sure I can do that now, after quite a bit of study on it. Cutting is involved, so I wanted to make sure I gleaned it.

That’s the main goal before end of weekend.

These two vids made the difference for me about process. By watching them the shitty instructions on the lock package made more sense.

Last night my daughter gave me an elbow massage in some very tense shoulder and upper-back muscles. It was painful but magnificent.

Today, after near 2 months of early mornings and long days, 7 days a week, I slept in to 10, had a slow breakfast and still haven’t lifted a finger yet in this quiet house.

I’m feeling guilty, but good and energized.

I’ll finish the day with various little things needed wrapped up; patching, caulking, touch-up painting…

2 of 2:

For as long as I've been in the fedi, we've been house-hunting. My growth in woodworking, etc, always hampered by space constraints. We recently found a big home with garden and I've been throwing myself into needed renovation work.

Eventually I'll get back to the wood and tools and setting up the atelier. I look forward to it.

All these activities are the kinds of topics I share and talk about, and I generally follow friendly people doing similar roll-up-the-sleeves work.

1 of 2:

I’ve been in the fedi via masto since April 2017. I’ve hopped around five different instances, always to smaller. I’m now happy where I am, under an alias, because while I have different interests, they largely center around conservation, home, garden, and DIY.

Of particular interest to me is traditional woodworking, including old tool restoration, and tool-making. I've picked up a growing interest in leather-working and metal-working, too, and I’d like to try working with stone…

There’s a different vibe in the fedi lately. I can sense it, even in my extremely quiet (by design) sliver of it. Now might be a good time to offer this self-recalibration…

I appreciate people at the top of their #woodworking game, producing stunning products… artists, craftsfolk, ‘pros’. But I don’t want only pictures of glossy finished products. That’s what magazines are for.

Here I want to see and know about your tools, your atelier, and you. I want to know how you work, what your processes are throughout a project. Talk about your background, how you got into the trade, hobby, interest. Share tricks and methods.

Be real, not a boring marketer. Help people.

Speaking of big armoires… I still haven't shown you the treasure the widow left us in the salon.

That will come later. :)

I also found something interesting in the attic. Also to share later.

Anyway, the bedrooms are painted and done, except for the last door needing painted and hung.

Focus now is on the upper landing area where the office will go. It’s tiled and ready for final painting (including those doors). Once the office is set up, the clogged entryway is cleared for starting.

Also need to build a scaffold for the high areas on the stairwell, unreachable and still papered.

Same slate tile will be used in entryway, but in a modular pattern.

Oh, and entry door is still not.

The trestles have been invaluable since working on the new house. Especially when disassembling/re-assembling the big armoire that came with the master bedroom and rises to the ceiling. I had no ladder to reach the brackets that were on top.

Lugging the ash trestles up and down flights of stairs has probably added to the weight loss.

Helpful in cutting doors, too. I’ll have another two or three of those to do later when getting to the main entry. 🪚

My little sliver of the fedi is quiet. Just happened across this by chance.

Is there a tool out there to capture one’s own masto threads?

I tend to post notes here on things before writing them up proper. Such a tool would be very helpful for later editing.

Might be too much to ask, I know.

The weight trick worked. On it two seconds.

I need to shave off another mil or two, though. Still slightly kissing the tiles.

But this saved me some time. Lot’s to get done today.

Meanwhile, tonight, I’ll but some weight on it and see if that brings it back enough.

And that’s the end of a 13-hour day.

I shortened (due to new tiling) and repainted the internal door (formerly purple) to match the finished room and stripped the hardware of paint. It has three hinges, drop on style. The door has been off for about a month and now a bit warped, about 3-5 mm. I can't line up the hinges.

I'm going to try clamping and screwing a flat, stiff board along the length of the hinge side and see if that can line it up enough to get it on. Else I remove the middle hinge and hope the shit wood holds.

The upstairs bedroom has the access to what is currently the ‘back attic’. It’s a small entry about ¾ the size of a normal door, proportionally. It has two particle board doors on each side of the casing. The external one is unpainted and bears mold. The internal one is painted and clean. I intend to make a proper door for this entry in warmer weather if we don’t find a used one first.

Until then…

Dutch community where you can build your home as you want. Only stipulation: you must garden food on at least 50% of property you own (fruit/nut trees count). The community has a long waiting list:

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/nov/28/oosterwold-dutch-suburb-where-residents-must-grow-food-on-at-least-half-of-their-property

We need more places like this where property care for agriculture good is required.

I now have a target for our property, which is currently too much grass.

Ah-ha… They seem to be called multi-point locks (‘serrures multipoints‘), and they are best when having a big timber door like ours.

Now I need to find one.
