Recently got some Libro.fm credits as a gift, and felt natural that BURNING THE BOOKS by Richard Ovenden be my first audiobook purchase there. Been on my list for some time, and has a particular relevance now.
Also really enjoying the platform itself- does for audiobooks what Bookshop does for print books, and being able to download DRM-free copies of your audiobooks is fantastic.

Recommend that, if you haven't for a while or have never before watched The Lego Movie, now is a particularly good time for it. A lot of things will seem very familiar.
(I promise it's good even though Chris Pratt is involved)

I'm given to understand that people here like cats.
We don't deserve them, but I think we probably all need them right now.

Really jazzed about this as I love both Bookshop and ebooks. Excited about potential integration with Kobo as well, as someone who uses Kobo just for the hardware and only sideloads books.
Big question I have though is... will Bookshop have a way to download purchased ebooks, even if they remain DRM-locked?
Feels like a great opportunity for Bookshop in line with its mission... but if I can't, not sure I would buy any ebooks this way.

Did it. Finished moving my Calibre library off Windows and onto my Endeavour OS machine. With that, all my stuff is out of Microsoft's ecosystem. Should have done it ages ago.

Struggling a bit to stay interested in ESCAPE VELOCITY by Victor Manibo. About a quarter through, and it is very hard to maintain interest in what happens to a bunch of billionaires at a boarding school reunion in space.
Is there a payoff at some point in this book?

In moving my ebook library over to a Linux machine, unfortunately find that there may not be an alternative to getting Adobe Digital Editions on it, which doesn't support Linux. So I found this and lol all the way to the sun.
Is it popular, or do we just have no choice because Adobe?
(ADE really really sucks as an ebook reader and ebook library management)

In the typical sense, honor is about self-sacrifice. And this is an immensely worthy cause- improving the present and future wellbeing of many lives beyond our own.
But self-sacrifice should never be asked, let alone demanded, of someone else, as it has been for us by the choices of past generations (some of them still around today).
What else would we have devoted our lives' work to, if not for this generational task? What else could we have?

A thing I think about sometimes, and trying to figure out how to get into my next presentation for students is the great injustice of you and I having to act on climate change.
Engaging in the collective effort to decarbonize and address other aspects of climate change (biodiversity loss, desertification, etc.) is a supremely honorable act.
But it shouldn't be something we need to ask people to do. It would be nice if we could follow whatever our dreams might be.

And yes, I know capitalism was a mistake.
The loss of pensions to 401(k) plans was one of the great thefts and tragedies of the Reagan era.

I'm also on the phone fighting with a previous 401(k) plan administrator's helpdesk to get them to reissue a rollover check that they claim was sent a month a ago that has never reached me. Great times!

Has anyone found (or written!) a good explainer and analysis of President Quixote's executive order targeting leases on federal lands and federal permits for wind energy?
It really sucks but I want to know how worried we should be.

High time I explained the Climate Owl hashtag I have in my bio...
Borrowed from Stephanie Kelton's phrase Deficit Owl, to distinguish from Deficit Hawk and Dove. (Read THE DEFICIT MYTH! She's great.) Hawks and doves view a problem through the same paradigm and take opposing positions on how to deal with it, whereas owls critique that paradigm itself and find new ways of looking at the problem.
In climate work much the same can happen. Sometimes hawks and doves both get it wrong.

New wave, new introduction!
I'm an engineer and physicist working in renewable energy, focused on energy storage. I'm all about renewables, electrification, sustainability, and circular economies.
Started in physics and someday hope to return, but currently focused on our great task.
I also like helping people find ways to get involved in climate work. Always happy to chat!
I toot about other stuff too, frequent topics in my bio.

Space junk and a cluttered night sky are the more obvious negative consequences of the privatization of spaceflight.
The less obvious (though I suppose it shouldn't have been) negative consequence is that space junk falling back down and generally becoming an enormous hazard to life on Earth.
