Ancestors

A thing I think about sometimes, and trying to figure out how to get into my next presentation for students is the great injustice of you and I having to act on climate change.

Engaging in the collective effort to decarbonize and address other aspects of climate change (biodiversity loss, desertification, etc.) is a supremely honorable act.

But it shouldn't be something we need to ask people to do. It would be nice if we could follow whatever our dreams might be.

Toot

In the typical sense, honor is about self-sacrifice. And this is an immensely worthy cause- improving the present and future wellbeing of many lives beyond our own.

But self-sacrifice should never be asked, let alone demanded, of someone else, as it has been for us by the choices of past generations (some of them still around today).

What else would we have devoted our lives' work to, if not for this generational task? What else could we have?

Descendants

@bluegreenandfree

Respectfully but strongly disagree.

This hasn't anything to do with self-sacrifice. People must take responsibility for their actions, and the narcissism of i.e. people of so-called countries is rampant and has to stop.

@proscience Were you alive when people started burning coal and oil? I know I wasn't.

We all live in a society on the same planet, yes. And some of these societies perpetuate this problem more than others. None of what I said is in contradiction with that.

I'm saying it is a tragedy that our ancestors (again, some more than others, and here in the US has much of the blame) have forced us into this self-sacrifice for our own survival.

@bluegreenandfree

Very Trumpian to claim being a victim when you're in fact a massive perpetrator and bear responsibility for the death, disease, hunger and destruction of hundreds of thousands of lives and livelihoods.

Self-sacrifice, my a**e.

Dishonest, narcissistic BS.

The deep contempt you show for the actual victims I have for people like you.
