Some times one has to say more than "Be nice!"

Though for most people this will suffice

It's not pessimistic to plan for a jerk

With a few tips for conduct your conference will work

Whatever your color, wherever you're from,

Worship gods or a god, or pray to none,

Reject gender binary or embrace an identity,

We will defend you quite aggressively,

Get a clear "Yes!" whenever you grope,

Provide content warnings so people can cope,

Don't be mistaken, I'm not being a prude

Unsolicited butt-touches are simply rude

Windows and Mac and Linux plus GNU

iOS, Android, and other things too

Some people sudo and some people shan't

Either way there's no flaming until they recant

It's not very welcoming when it occurs

That someone around you is uttering slurs

If I respect your rights and you respect mine,

We'll get lots of things done and have a good time!

If you wouldn’t do it at a St. Pauli game because you like having teeth, it is a fascist gesture.

The old school rocket Nazis told off sexist Americans who got in the way of women at NASA, in case you needed to know the bar is in hell and that apartheid shithead is under it.

It is "for fucks' sake", for all of the fucks. Every last one of them. Especially now, we need the power of every one behind our swearing.

The last time there were a bunch of Nazis in Cape Canaveral, they could all do math and none of them needed babysitters to stop them from sticking their fingers in light sockets.

There was no reason to tolerate fascists then, and even less of a reason today.

The role of a technologist is not to lecture people about having fun. If the way people are having fun turns out to be harmful, that is something that humanities people should be addressing. You know, humanities, that discipline that technologists have been ignoring?

This isn't just about corporate technologies. When open source alternatives are frustrating to use and inaccessible, no amount of lecturing people about the evils of closed source code will get them to use your tech.

Make it usable, make it fun, listen to your end users.

A lot of the demonisation of "mainstream" social media is just misogyny.

there is nothing wrong with using social media to talk about fashion, music, and dancing instead of lecturing people about why they should be using linux.

you don't have to understand why people like using TikTok.

You should accept that people like things that you don't like. People can have different hobbies than you. People can enjoy using technologies that just work and you can enjoy de bugging broken things all day.

You can be judgemental in your own little bubble. if you want to get more people to use federated social media, however, you need to give a damn what the end users want to do.

furthermore, some activism is more effective with a wider reach. If you want smaller social networks, that is fine. Just don't lecture people, including people with formal education and/or practical experience in communication, for wanting a way to reach a bigger audience.

It turns out, via Robert Rankin, that Terry Pratchett did not like Neil Gaiman.

So hooray Terry!

Also, ew, another thing out of the creep playbook - claiming that someone was a great friend once they can’t object anymore.

Oh wow why does the billionaire think FLOSS conferences will welcome him?

Maybe because we are still discussing whether it's fair to ban:

Man convicted for having child abuse materials,

man who advocates for child abuse,

man with massive Nazi tattoo who drove Kathy Sierra off the internet in 2007,

and so many godsdamned serial rapists and sexual harassers that you have to be specific about which one you're talking about, sometimes when discussing one open source project.

Oh, and there's a whole bunch of ableism too. Why would a billionaire feel welcome in a poorly-ventilated space without a COVID safety policy? Maybe because the only thing separating many open source project leaders from billionaires is the number of zeroes in their bank accounts.

If you don't give a damn about what end users want and need, especially when that is usability and accessibility, how are you better than a billionaire? Show your work.

@signalapp

I never opted in to registration lock. After entering the correct PIN, I am locked out of my app. This is unacceptable. I am finding posts about this dating back a few years. Is this bug on your list of things to fix? Without warning, seven days of no contact can be disturbing to one's contacts, perceived as rude, and in some situations, dangerous.

It makes the app unfit for purpose at work.
