It's January 16, and I was reminded that today is #AppreciateADragonDay . I ought to browse that hashtag today to see how the other #dragonsofmastodon are commemorating it. :drgn_happy:

It seems I haven't come by Mastodon in the past week (or at least, no new posts/comments). I've been distracting myself with other things in the meantime.

It's been difficult for me to let go of Twitter entirely, given that the artists I follow there seem to have set up a presence on Bluesky but not any Mastodon instance that I know of.

At the risk of asking a stupid question, is #Bluesky on the same federation protocol as #Mastodon ? As of now, my account officially follows no one (on any instance) and my feed consists entirely of the local instance.

Does anyone have any tips on how to fix the user interface of a #RaspberryPi running #RaspberryPi OS?

I recently tried upgrading the OS version, since I found out that a new version was officially available. But rather than doing a clean install, I followed instructions I found online for how to do an in-line update (basically changing over the repository versions).

I changed over the repositories, and downloaded all the updated packages. But after installation, the desktop environment looked corrupted. The PIXEL desktop environment appears to have been replaced by LXDE (which I now understand is what PIXEL is based on), the background is a generic Debian background, and the taskbar is blacked out and the "start menu" button is missing.

I'm prepared to just re-image the SD card with a fresh install of the latest RPi OS, since I'm not knowledgeable enough about this to know how to fix it.

Anyone else in the fediverse take language lessons on #Duolingo ? I achieved a 2000-day streak there this past Saturday, which is the longest contiguous streak I've ever managed.

It would have been even higher than this, if not for one holiday (Christmas Day?) years ago where I forgot to complete at least one lesson, and I didn't have any Streak Freezes equipped. I've had to use a few Streak Freezes in order to preserve this streak, but for the most part I'm diligent about completing at least two lessons every day.

I was about to make a post expressing my feelings, but I decided to scroll back on my old posts and found this one from February that says basically the same thing.

It would be neat to know if it's possible to create a unified "following list + local instance" feed, but if not, then two distinct feeds might be the only choice.

I had a strange #dream last night. The only part I can remember clearly is the following:

I was inside some building with a large open foyer / atrium that extended to the ceiling. The ceiling was mostly glass...one solid piece, I think. I was not the only person in the building. I found myself looking up towards the glass ceiling, and all of a sudden I saw a mass of water fall down on the ceiling all at once. It poured continuously like a waterfall, and I watched as the glass ceiling began to form cracks. Within seconds, the ceiling gave way and the water began rushing in. All the people around me started panicking and fleeing for their lives, and I wanted to do the same but somehow I felt like I couldn't move. The water flooded the building and the water level kept rising. Eventually, I found myself pushed out of the building entirely via the hole in the ceiling.

I don't remember much after that. Just...very odd.

Sometimes playing #SuperAnimalRoyale reminds me of Edge of Tomorrow.

I focus on completing daily/weekly quests while playing matches, and then I end up getting killed much sooner than expected (i.e. I make a lot less progress on a quest than I was hoping). I promptly start another match in the hopes I can survive long enough to make more substantial progress in the quest, and I'll continue playing consecutive matches until I either meet the quest or tire out.

It reminds me of Edge of Tomorrow in how Emily Blunt forced Tom Cruise to spar with the training machines over and over until he could handle his own. I'll even, much like Emily Blunt, tell myself "Again" as I launch another match.

(Though I'll admit I worry about how all these extra matches impact my career stats. I'm still trying to find out if there's any way I can reset career stats in order to take performance averages from this point forward, rather than from the very beginning.)

For those of you going to #FurryFiesta2024 this month: I'm bringing back my "Card Sharks: Furry Edition" game show panel. This flyer has the date/time and location, and I'll be distributing hard copies of these in the con space.

For those who have attended one of these in the past: I plan on having new and unique prizes for the winners!

An idiosyncrasy of mine that I feel like sharing:

If I'm creating some sort of standalone data table in #MicrosoftExcel where all I need is the data itself and special formatting or display characteristics aren't required, I default to saving it as a CSV rather than an actual Excel spreadsheet. If there are times when I need to preserve settings like column width or rich text or conditional formatting, I'll begrudgingly save it as an Excel spreadsheet.

The reasoning in my mind is that a CSV of a data table is smaller than an Excel spreadsheet containing the same data (which it is). Even though an Excel XLSX spreadsheet can be less than 10 kB when it only contains plain data -- virtually nothing in the era of cheap gigabytes -- it's the principle of the thing. (I'll sometimes do similar for "plain" Word documents, saving them as Office Open XML in Wordpad vs. an actual MS Word file.)

I guess this shows my dedication to the concept of lean programming? :blobfoxlaughsweat:

Related question: how do people not get #BuyersRemorse on most of what they buy? I probably spend more time than most people, debating the benefits and drawbacks of every "frivolous" purchase, and I still lack confidence that I made the right decision.

After debating it for a bit, I finally decided to buy #SuperAnimalRoyale Super Edition DLC today. Considering how (as of the time of this message) I'm level 95 in the game and have put 62 hours of play, I decided I've proven I have enough interest in the game (at least for the foreseeable future) to justify the purchase. This constitutes my one game purchase for 2024.

I hope I don't get buyer's remorse for this, because a refund is not possible. :blobfox0_0:

A related discussion, something that first came to my mind several years ago:

I look at the ID number on the badges of conventions I've attended. To give a concrete example, my badge number at TFF (the same number I've had all the times I've attended) is in the 14000's. I've looked at that number and thought "This high number means I'm a latecomer to the convention. Nobody will take me seriously because I first attended long after it was first established. I missed my chance to 'get in on the ground floor' with a low badge number that attests to how long I've been attending."

I'm sure there are those who say it's just a sequentially assigned number and that it holds no significance whatsoever. But my mind places far more trust and emphasis on numbers than perhaps it should.

Sometimes I wonder what my human serial number is. Assuming every human from the dawn of time was assigned a serial number based on the chronological order in which they were born.

It would probably be a 12- or even 13-digit number. And despite the fact that I had no control over when and where I was born, somehow having a higher number makes me feel insignificant. Like I was born too late to have been the first to accomplish something of significance.

I know that the federated nature of #Mastodon means I can follow accounts on other instances from my home instance (assuming they're not de-listed) without having to create accounts on those instances.

As it stands, my only Mastodon account (on this instance) does not actually follow a single account, anywhere. The feed I scroll through for new content, consists of the live feed from the server I'm on. I'm hesitant to actually follow any individual account, especially on a different instance.

I could use some advice from anyone who happens to read this: How do you configure Mastodon to create one unified feed of followed accounts and the live feed from the local instance? Is that even possible? I don't anticipate following such large numbers of individual accounts that I'd have a continually active "follows" feed, so if I could inject those into the "local instance" live feed I already browse, that would be ideal.

In other news, I reached a 1900 day streak today in #Duolingo language lessons. It would have been longer than that, if not for a single day many years ago where I forgot to take a lesson and I didn't have Streak Freezes equipped.

Whenever I play online multi-player games (which isn't very often), I seem to get far more serious and competitive about the gameplay than when playing single-player. #SuperAnimalRoyale just happens to be the one I'm playing at the moment. I feel like all eyes are on me, silently judging me for my in-game appearance or performance. Or I feel like I must try harder because I've convinced myself that a high skill level is the only way I'll get people to notice and respect me.

A small #SuperAnimalRoyale update:

I've been playing on EU servers lately, during times when the lobbies are mostly filled with bots, in order to practice my skill. Today, for the first time in a while, I switched back to NA server (the fastest ping) and tried a Solo match. I was dead before I could achieve a single kill.

I see this as proof that I'm not ready to face other human players yet. I probably need at least 300 more hours of practice with bots, and to achieve a career K/D of at least 8.0, before I try matches with mostly humans again.

(I also find that the animal-related pun that appears whenever you're killed in Solo mode, adds insult to injury by rubbing the death in your face.)

And another thing I wanted to mention:

One of the booths at the show this year, was a representative from the Society of Paper Money Collectors (SPMC). One would think that I would have heard of this organization by now, but I never have.

It looks like its annual membership is affordable and allows me access to a variety of things. It'll give me a chance to talk about the subject with other knowledgeable people, without having to wait a year for the next local money show.
