So, here's your resident money dragon with a #numismatics update:
I attended the local money show today (as I have every year since 2013). Most years I don't set out aiming to buy anything in particular, since I won't know what's for sale until I get there, but this year I already decided what I wanted: a 2024 #YearOfTheDragon 10-oz #silver bar. I bought one back in 2012 and I want to continue that pattern.
I can buy one online from APMEX.com, but I figured if one was available at the show, I could negotiate the price and/or not pay for shipping charges. No one at the show had this specification on hand (though a few had some 1-oz bars or rounds with "Year of the Dragon" motifs that weren't dated 2024).
However, from talking to several dealers, my plans for purchasing changed. I'll still buy the bar I want...eventually. Not right away. APMEX is probably charging a higher premium right now since it was just introduced. I'll check the price later in the year and buy it if the premium drops.

@Intaglio_Dragon How did you go? Did you get one yet? Looking at the link now I see it is $288.30, which they claim is 43% off (they also claim their regular price is $303.30... I never claimed to be the greatest mathematician, but I'm not sure that adds up...)

@CoinOfNote I haven't purchased one yet. I've set a reminder for myself to check the price on or around the 20th of each month. I'll compare it to the spot price of silver at that time, and see what the percentage markup is. When I checked the price this month, I think there was about a 16% markup over spot, compared to earlier months where there was a 19-20% markup. I suspect this trend will continue, so I'll probably buy it in a few months (but definitely before the end of the year).

@Intaglio_Dragon Cool! I look forward to seeing it when you do! We had Soooo many year of the dragon releases here, it got a little over the top!

@CoinOfNote My focus is actually on banknotes rather than coins, but (given that I have a dragon character) I like collecting dragon-related specimens.

@Intaglio_Dragon Cool! I admire anyone who can limit their numismatic collection to a set theme etc. I'm like a magpie and get distracted by all the shiny things 😆
