I love old signs and I love, love, love mapping projects so this Curbed Los Angeles article from 2019 is a winner for me, despite being sliiiiiightly outdated at this point in time (RIP San Francisco's Coca Cola sign). You may not know the name Electrical Products Corporation but you absolutely know their work. Just fascinating scholarship on this overlooked aspect of the cityscape. https://la.curbed.com/maps/epco-signs-california-neon-los-angeles-bay-area

I have an art show opening soon at a venue in Amsterdam. All of the exhibiting artists are immigrants to the Netherlands and we were asked to bring a snack that "represents home." As an American from California what should I bring? My current list of ideas:
What are some other quintessential American/Californian snacks which aren't common abroad?

Bay Area Peoples -- I'm looking for examples of novelty architecture in the Bay. Buildings shaped like objects, like Coit Tower or the Camera Obscura or Libby's Water Tower. Whatcha got? #sfba #noveltyarchitecture

There are seven cats in the house right now (2 are mine, 3 are my partner's, and two are our housemate's). The girl cats refuse to join the feeding frenzy but the five boy cats are like little eating machines come dinner time.

Do you have older pictures of this bar? I would love to add them into the timeline.

So there you go -- 100ish years (well, 106) of Heinold's First and Last Chance Saloon. This FAR TOO obsessive timeline is brought to you by the San Francisco Ghost Sign Mapping Project's patrons -- https://www.patreon.com/c/sfghostsigns

1989! A No Loitering sign has been added under the Open sign, which has now been painted green. if you've noticed, to date the Jack London Rendezvous signs has been red/brown -- but these days it's the same green as this little Open sign. Were they painted at the same time? Who has pics from the 1980's/1990's who can help confirm.
Also, this is the first appearance of historical plaque on the building.
The callbox, mailbox, tin awning, and large outdoor lamp are all gone

Fast-forward to the 1970's. The neon martini glass is gone, never to be seen again. The Golden West Beer sign has been restored and stained glass added around the edge of the sign (this was never the case in older pictures).
There's a mailbox out front and the trees from the previous pic are BIG now.

And later in the 1960's we get landscaping! The chain link fence is gone, the parking lot has been paved, and there are plants in front and next to the bar. Classy.

It's the 1960's and the neon transformation is complete! Also, is this the first color picture of the bar? It might be. Anyway, the "First and Last Chance" is now rendered in neon. They're also no longer advertising food, instead they're listing that the bar is 21+ and the opening days/hours.
The lantern hanging over the sign is gone and there's some sort of red enamel thermometer on the far left of the windows.

Yet another, another 1950's picture, with yet more neon! Now there's a small neon Open sign has been added over the front door. Cute.
Also, the small Established 1883 sign to the right of the door has been removed and a tin awning has been added to the side of the building

Yet another 1950's pic. Clearest shot of the billboard on the side of the building (the frame has been visible in pictures dating back to the 1920's). Why aren't there more pictures taken from this angle? Weird.

Another 1950's pic. The Sea Food Cocktails sign to the right of the door has been replaced with one saying Established 1883.

And neon enters in the 1940's/1950's...
There's an Open sign with a neon martini glass perpendicular to the building, Most importantly, the Jack London Rendezvous neon makes an appearance, which according to the National Parks Service, was added in 1952 but which I have questions about.
The signs around the door are still advertising food but now it's HOT lunch and they're also selling tobacco.
The Shell windsock is gone.
