This graph shows weekly wastewater data in my area since the beginning of the pandemic.

Data source: https://www.mwra.com/biobot/biobotdata.htm

In 2020-2021, values ~250 copies/mL were considered high & justified mitigations like mask mandates.

In 2024, the same ~250 copies/mL is the new "baseline", considered "normal/low" & no mitigations exist.

Maybe new variants shed more into wastewater? Maybe there was steady population growth in my area? Or maybe covid is actually more prevalent? 🤷🏻‍♀️

There's a lot of chatter about how the CDC has - once again - changed the way they report on covid-related data. They now have "updated baselines" for wastewater reporting based on previous 12 months of data.

https://www.cdc.gov/nwss/rv/COVID19-currentlevels.html

It's a lot of math & I don't pretend to understand it. I don't feel equipped to pass judgment, but I am worried that this new method will obscure meaningful information about how much "baseline" prevalence is acceptable/reasonable.

Update: A different ER doctor prescribed remdesivir.

I'm relieved my relative is getting something - and maybe remdesivir is better than Paxlovid in this case, I have no idea - but still very angry that the first doctor refused to prescribe ANYTHING. Even if they didn't want to prescribe Paxlovid they should have prescribed something else like the 2nd doctor did.

I know of studies that say Paxlovid may not be effective for young and healthy people, but have never heard of it being withheld from an elderly person with multiple risk factors!?!

The caregiver will try to get Paxlovid from the patient's PCP.

It's even worse than I thought out there. Be careful everyone. #MaskUp

Omg.

An elderly family member is in the ER for a fall. This person is 83, has Parkinson's Disease, and is a lifelong smoker. While in the ER, they tested positive for covid.

Their caregiver requested #Paxlovid and reports, "The doctor that was here was like we don't prescribe that and it doesn't work. That is exactly what she said."

🤯 ?!?!

Question for the covid-cautious community:

I know some people use iota-carrageenan nasal sprays as an additional measure on top of masks, air cleaning, ventilation, etc. I've heard of people using them for high-risk situations like airplanes or medical appointments.

I'm wondering - not for me, for someone who is not happy wearing a mask - would using a nasal spray INSTEAD of a mask be a "better than nothing" option? Is iota-carrageenan nasal spray safe to use daily?

Thanks!

Hello people,

Can anyone recommend a legitimate carbon offset company or organization? Or perhaps your preferred organization to donate to for fighting against the climate crisis?

I don't fly much, but I want to make a concerted effort to do something to offset the damage any time I do have to fly.

Thanks for your help.

I haven't told many people IRL about having covid because I don't want to deal with dismissive responses nor comments about how I don't need to isolate since CDC says I don't have to. 🙄

From those I've told, I'm reminded how much of an #introvert I really am. They said, "You must be climbing the walls by now!"

Actually, I've got Pluto TV with 24/7 re-runs of old favorites from the 1980-1990s. I'm mad about having covid. I'm sad I missed Christmas advent. But re: actual isolation, I'm fine. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Personal covid update.

I've been rapid testing every other day. For a 4-day period, I felt absolutely no improvement in symptoms (congestion & tiredness).

On 1st day of 4-day period, I tested super positive, a very dark T line appeared even before C line.

Feeling no improvement, I skipped testing on 3rd day.

On 4th day, despite feeling not one bit better, I tested only SLIGHTLY positive, a very faint T line appeared after 17 minutes.

I just thought that was interesting.

Grrr. 😠

No, no thank you, I am REALLY NOT INTERESTED in seeing your photos of a large indoor unmasked gathering for a 90th birthday party with multiple at-risk elderly people in attendance.

Not while I'm in isolation WITH COVID. 😠

And knowing what I know of the attendees, I'm sure there were ZERO precautions taken, not even by those who flew in for the party.

I swear, this is (partly) why I left Facebook, yet still they will text me such photos. 😡

I'm isolating w/ covid & my patience is VERY thin.

My number is on the National Do Not Call Registry, which does not expire: https://www.donotcall.gov

For whatever reason, I'm suddenly getting spam calls. Tired of them, I'm now answering them & asking them - politely - to take me off their call list. Most callers say some version of "ok" & hang up.

Today's caller said ok & then launched into their spiel! I snapped, "WHY ARE YOU STILL TALKING? I TRIED TO BE POLITE NOW STOP TALKING & HANG UP!" 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have no idea how this website is being used, or if the data is being used at all, but just a reminder that if you test positive for covid on a rapid test in the US, the NIH runs this website for reporting your results:

Lesson #2: Preventing household transmission is possible, so just do it.

My son's symptoms were mild, plus with all rapid tests being negative, I didn't feel justified in making him isolate. I asked him to mask in the house (which he did inconsistently) and I surrounded him with air purifiers, but that just wasn't enough.

Twice before, my family was able to prevent household transmission when someone had covid, so I know it's possible. When sick, must isolate. No exceptions!

Lesson #1: Rapid tests aren't good enough in kids.

I know that covid tends to be less severe in kids. There are lots of articles if you search "covid less severe kids".

I haven't seen anything that specifically says this, but I wonder if less severe illness in kids translates to lower viral load and more false negatives in rapid tests?

I resisted buying a home molecular test due to $$$, but now I am almost certain I will get one soon. #Pluslife seems to be most recommended model.

OMG.

My teen son was sick all last week. Said "everyone" at school is sick & NO ONE is masking (except him). Symptoms presented like a head cold. 3 rapid tests 48 hours apart all negative. He's better now.

But 10 days after his 1st symptoms, I got sick. Yesterday's rapid test was negative, but after a 102.5 F fever last night, today I am positive.

I'm SOOOO upset because there are things I could have done to prevent this, but I didn't. Here are my Lessons Learned:

Thanksgiving through Christmas is now "that time of year" when I have to justify asking people to rapid test while they look at me incredulously and say "well I've had covid and don't have any lingering health issues" and then I end up looking like a hypochondriac as I sit by a cracked-open window because I thought everyone would test but then someone shows up unexpectedly without testing.

I hate this timeline.

Neil Young knows what's up.

He doesn't actually say "covid" but what else could he mean. Summer is not flu or RSV season. 🤷🏻‍♀️

"The Chrome Hearts European Tour is under review. The tour submitted did not stay within the requested venues and is being re-done to omit any indoor shows.Indoor shows may be too risky on a health level and we don't want to have to cancel any shows because of health concerns this coming summer.More news soon."

With the holidays approaching, I wish everyone in the covid-aware community could gather with people who share this love language. ❤️

For me personally, I'm the only one who speaks this language, but at least there are a few family members who will accommodate it, even if begrudgingly. 😕

P.S. I miss seeing @PeoplesCDC here. 😢

Woohoo!! 🎉 I'm so excited to open up the crowdsourced #IndoorCO2 map and see new data points in North America from someone other than me! 😁

View the map: https://indoorco2map.com/

If you have a #CO2Monitor like the #Aranet #Aranet4 or #Airvalent, you can help collect data. (From experience I know that if your phone is an Android, you need at least Android 11.)
