So, looking ahead to a rather cool -6F (-21C) tonight here in western #Massachusetts.

For a change, a real winter: cold + some snow

As a historian of modern Germany preparing to teach a #Holocaust course at 2 institutions this term, I honestly feel no need to weigh in on the interminable (can only 1 day have passed?) debate about the #Musk #Nazi salute thing. And I wish others felt the same way.

Uncertain times ahead. The '80s were no picnic, either. The Germans pondered & fretted about right-wing resurgence, nuclear war, & dying forests. Music--from the impassioned to the satirical or just silly--helped

So, a day of transitions. College president announced his resignation.I'm sure he felt the date was symbolically significant🙄

Oddly enough, this encomium omits the string of failures that alienated all constituencies ¯_(ツ)_/¯

best culinary advice of the day:

"Because hot oil can cause severe injuries, make this dish in the kitchen a few times before you are confident you can do it without accidentally frying a guest."

Oops, forgot to complete series. National Gallery closed yesterday & will be again tomorrow, so: grateful we got to visit earlier this month. Always so encouraging to see diverse #art-loving crowds: whether at Impressionist show (long waits; closed today!) or for the old standbys

Delighted to visit the National Museum of African American History & see such a large & attentive crowd. Spent a whole afternoon just in the 3 floors of core historical exhibits, had to be shooed out by the guards. Serious scholars can close down both a bar and a museum

Botanical displays involving model railroad sets & representations of major buildings & monuments are a thing at the holiday season in Washington DC National Botanic Garden (+ in New York, I am told), so these as well as the greenhouses drew a good crowd on a cold rainy day

Glad I was able to visit our National Gallery 2 weekends ago vs. having to contend with closure this time. One of the most encouraging things about the recent visit to DC was the size and enthusiasm of the crowds in museums and other cultural sites

Nothing against Poe + Baltimore! Two weekends ago, I was pleased to sit in a Maryland bar & watch Baltimore beat Pittsburgh to earn a place in the #football playoffs

Who could dislike a team called The Ravens with mascots named Edgar, Allan, & Poe?

Tho born in #Boston OTD 1809, Edgar Allan Poe was not fond of the place. Nonetheless, it honored him with a sculpture by Stefanie Rocknack in 2014

It was in Boston that Poe (born there OTD 1809) anonymously published what has become the rarest of his works: the 1827 Tamerlane and Other Poems. By a Bostonian

https://www.eapoe.org/works/editions/taop.htm

indeed, it is called "the Rarest Book in American Literature"

Yes, #Boston, #Massachusetts: although he is in the common mind of course more associated with Richmond, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York
