Related to that, my parents knew what my brother and I were likely in for as we grew up, so they insisted, much to our own protestations, that we learn print and Braille simultaneously, figuring we'd need the latter more as our vision failed. I'm grateful they had the literal foresight, as I could no longer read anything in print (except by touch) by the time I was in college.

But I'm curious if our story is unique, or if others grew up learning both at the same time?

Happy World #Braille Day. This tactile code has helped keep me literate through school and my professional life. Without it, I have no idea where I'd be.

This afternoon, I'm going through a collection of backup DVD's I made in the mid-2000's to copy the things I don't have, ironically enough, back to hard drives before I lose the ability to read these disks.

Part of this collection includes a bunch of lossless recordings I made throughout college which, to my surprise, I had enough foresight to back up, and for years I thought they had been lost. So thank you, past Steve.

I realize that #HamRadio is all voluntary, as is any kind of leadership role (such as being a net control station). With that said, if, as an NCS, you repeatedly fail to acknowledge check-ins, don't copy callsigns properly, and, after being told multiple times that at least one person on your role has been dead for months, continue to call them, maybe this isn't the gig for you.

Nothing like the sudden unexpected death of someone you know to put a damper on Christmas Eve. RIP, John.

Got my #Braille display back from the repair shop. Along with a working keyboard, it has brand new rubber feet. Any guesses on how long they'll stay attached?

Glad to be able to read again.

Right now I'm wishing my past self had known that I would have had to start the day earlier than usual. Ready to crash now, but I committed to running a #HamRadio net in just over an hour. One day I'll learn.

It looks like the keyboard on my Orbit Reader 20 has quit working, with the exception of the dot 8 and forward advance bar to do a system reset. I suspect it's hosed, but in case others here know how to resolve, I'd be grateful for tips. I know repairs will cost nearly as much as a new machine, and I don't have much interest in either at this point as I already had one unit fail in the same way a couple years back.

Yoe, #blind kind: I need to make a few screen recordings for work which can capture both my microphone and screen reader. I can go about this with a fake Zoom meeting, but surely there has to be something better out there. Thanks for any pointers.

It's no secret at work that I'm a #HamRadio operator. Knowing that, one of my colleagues just informed me he got his #GMRS license. Not quite the same, I know, but given he was in the path of Helene, I'm happy he did it for his family's future safety.

I learned a new git trick this morning. I wanted to update an acceptance test I wrote a few weeks back as part of a bug fix, but couldn't remember the file I modified. With a test suite of hundreds of files, there was no way I was going to comb through them all.

Instead, it's possible to show all files in a directory you changed with the following command

git log --since="1 month ago" --author="your-email@example.com" --name-only --pretty=format: --

Worked a treat.
