I've had my current job for a pretty long time, and the part that I keep thinking about is how like as recently as a year ago I would have said it's the best place I ever worked. Yes, it's corpo stuff that doesn't matter, but the bosses seemed to really care about those of us doing work.
Boy did they have me fooled. Turns out they're just better liars.

I have never not wanted to quit after an interaction with HR. Here's the latest:
I've been working remote since the beginning of the pandemic. My work gets done. My manager supports my argument that I have an immune compromised partner, and can't get her sick. There was no problem.
HR gets involved and won't buy the argument that they should accommodate me on behalf of my partner. "We wish we could help you," they lie "but the law blah blah blah."
So, I have my doctor write me an accommodation. HR proceeds to deliberately misunderstand, and sends menacing letters to me via registered mail. We go round a couple times, but I get the sense they're trying to bait me into demonstrating uncooperativeness in the process so they can fire me for cause.
The short of it is that I'm supposed to RTO next week. Needless to say, I'm looking for a job now.

my current out of office reply: I just discovered the alt text in #xkcd, and I cannot respond to your email because I'm rereading all of them.

Welp, looks like trouble’s brewing in corpo_land. Tell me what you think, guys:
I’ve been advised that I’d better formalize my work-from home arrangement with an accommodation. Some executives have noticed that I ,in particular, am always remote, and they don’t like it. The thing is, tho, that the justification I’d convinced my manager of is that my partner is on immune-suppressants. Evidently, the ADA doesn’t cover anyone but the employee.
I’m going to still try to work that angle, but I’m also going to see if my doctor will write my support based on #LongCovid .
Does anyone have experience with this?

It comes as no surprise, the way we finally got it was from the one of our adult children who lives with us.
He's not careful outside the house, so when he's inside the house, we assume he's got covid at all times.
He's had active infections a few times, and we've successfully avoided it. Until this last time, he was so sick, his mom couldn't overcome the urge to go comfort him. She got sick, I got sick, etc.

Well, fam, I got #covid back in January, and I've not been doing well since.
[#]LongCovid for me has consisted of missing sleep from coughing fits, and having no energy.
I was in excellent health before, and now I'm just ok. Some have it way worse, and if that's you, I'm so sorry, but even this relatively small group of ongoing symptoms has been enough to seriously disrupt my life. I just can't do the things I used to do.

My son moved out yesterday, and it's funny how different it feels over here already. Anyways, he's super excited, and I'm happy for him. Turns out, he's a great guy, and all credit to him for doing the work; it's rough out there rn. But I'm honored to have been able to help him get going. Here's a couple things I did to help:
I worked with him to make a plan. Basically, asked him to think about how he's going to eat in our capitalist hellscape. Get mad, work to change the system, protest, riot, all that. But what's the plan to survive the system while you do. He decided he wanted to join the IBEW and do an apprenticeship. It took a long time to get that going. Years.
In the meantime, every month since he stopped going to school, he put up an amount roughly equivalent to what he would pay in rent somewhere, and I held it to give back when he got his own place. We treated this as an obligation. Not optional. There was some conflict about this, for sure. Anyways, It's been a few years, so it amounted to a good chunk; I gave it all to him this morning, and now he's set up way better than I was when I started.
But the main thing about all of that, is that he did it. It was all his idea, and he did all the work. I just facilitated and maybe coached a bit. He now has the lived experience of making a plan and executing it over an extended period. I believe it will serve him well.
Good luck, little buddy!
