Wanted to nap a little before the next seminar sessions, but one of my colleagues brought along her 1 and 2-year-old, turning our chalet into a screamfest. x_x

Our spiciest, most experimental setup by far at the moment.
And yes, I can still measure increased radiation in the lab on the other side of that wall. It's a good thing nobody is currently actively working in that one!

A question probably most relevant to my German-speaking followers: Has anyone else seen this CD-ROM or knows where I could obtain it? I crave a specific nostalgia of late 90s gaming and I had this exact CD as a child... Photos from a now-defunct site.

Early morning, gluing small things onto other things then wrapping the thing with an insulating thing so a large thing can heat them to high temperatures while I look for a phase transition to happen. That's a thing I do.

NIMs in the sunshine!
It's still weird to me that all this system does is provide a mechanical interface and DC power. That's it. Everything carrying any kind of information or high voltage needs to go through the front panels.
And yes, they are daisy-chained via GPIB.

That is one toasty little UHV chamber right after bake-out!

It often fascinates me how most of our labs are still in their original state, as they were when the building was constructed in the 1980s. The predecessors of my current group were the first occupants. The lights, fittings, and fixtures are all from a time when Germany was still divided. The cryostat, the pumps, the Geiger counters on the shelf there, you really couldn't tell in which year I took this photo just by looking at the equipment on display (and still in regular use).

Look my new old toy arrived, a 1980s Gaussmeter! <3
Paid just 100€ for it, thanks to yeenfriend @rynnan bringing it to my attention. Sadly, two probes appear to be broken, but one works! Now we finally have a backup device, not just the single, borrowed one we rely on...

So we have this thing from 1980, Walker/Magnemetrics Gaussmeter, Model MG-3D. Someone mechanically ruined both of the probes it came with.
It's a long shot, but is there any chance someone might know where to find replacement probes for one? I realize one could somehow try to make one, but I don't have infinite time, so it's either "obtain probe" or "I give the thing away" :)

I'm having a self-care day today, which means I'm going to change the oil of my 1970s turbopump. It's not entirely transparent anymore; we can't have that! And my colleagues are using it a lot at the moment, so I'm sure it'll appreciate it.

It's 2025, and I'm scavenging a floppy drive to replace a broken one because it's still the most straightforward method of getting data off this yellowed/beige DOS machine. We still use it due to the homebrew ISA card, which in turn controls a 1970s XRD. Yeah science.

And while the world burns and is on the verge of a fascist kleptocracy, the venerable 433DX/D just sits there and does its thing like the 90s never ended. It doesn't know what Windows 11 is or what ransomware means. And it's okay with that.

I'm having a great time with this camera! It's one thing to know that an appliance or object gets warm when in use, but to directly see it happening visually, that's kinda cool!

Doing a bakeout like in the 70s before fancy power electronics became a thing. I'm amused at how the entire unit visibly shakes from the switching action, but mainly because the contactor closes again instead of remaining open.

After all of yesterday's troubles, we managed to WD-40 the pole shoes back into adjustability. The makeshift power supply appears to be working, all the lead shielding is back in place, and the radiation source is back in its driving unit...
I wish our setups wouldn't look so haphazardly thrown together though...

At the end of the day, we decided to leave it for tomorrow. I'm sure the WD-40 just needs some time to penetrate.
The one thing I'm proud of: I immediately put on my work gloves, because I knew that every "Let's give it a quick try!"-job will turn into hand-wrecking. And it indeed prevented two unexpectedly jabby objects from getting through to my skin. Hand injuries are just ridiculously irritating...
