Things just kept escalating. A simple "Can we measure in field?" turned into us deconstructing the entire setup. The jury-rigged power supply did work, but when we tried to wind in the pole shoes, it was rather difficult. And then the magnet just ejected a rod out its bore.

When I tell people I have a PhD and work in a lab, they imagine a guy in a white lab coat in a clean & tidy environment.

In reality, it's hoodies and oil-stained jeans, leaking vacuum pumps, popping capacitors, and me hacking away at 40-year-old, crusty grease that mechanically prevents science from happening.

At the end of the day, we decided to leave it for tomorrow. I'm sure the WD-40 just needs some time to penetrate.

The one thing I'm proud of: I immediately put on my work gloves, because I knew that every "Let's give it a quick try!"-job will turn into hand-wrecking. And it indeed prevented two unexpectedly jabby objects from getting through to my skin. Hand injuries are just ridiculously irritating...
