I am now using Merge Mansion as a pomodoro timer 🤪

("⚡" refills to full in 200 minutes.)

Yes, the one from the mobile ads. It's pretty decent to take my mind off current events.

I should have checked this in store because Apple but of course their 3.5mm cable¹ is not properly compatible with Android phones.²

¹ I know it's a DAC.

² Which is arguably lack of USB device volume controls on Android because ???, and I can't really blame Apple for not setting theirs to max by default because that's bad too.

I put an older battery in my phone. It starts.

Let's see if this (slow-)charges without becoming a potential explosive hazard.

If I do everything before sleeping that counts as having completed all my TODOs for the day, right?

(It's 4AM.)

ActivityPub hot take: Implementations shouldn't use inbox queues for anything up to and including authentication, validation and authorisation, but instead apply backpressure across the network.

GoToSocial has the right idea here: https://docs.gotosocial.org/en/latest/federation/ratelimiting/

This reduces cost traps for smaller instances and, given decent core budgeting, ensures the instance won't "brown out" or build up a delay due to queue length.

It also means you can return much better federation diagnostics to the sender in case of error (or sometimes warnings when you succeed).

Sending instances usually retry delivery, more or less intelligently, up to a point. You should monitor to ensure you're below capacity most of the time and send appropriate response headers when you do have to time out requests.

Once committed to your local model (where applicable), fanning out into notifications/websocket/potentially feeds if you have a huge sharded system can and should all be done as deferred jobs.

Sent some criticism to my bank in a support ticket calling the UX-design of a specific online banking feature "truly bad" 🫠 (after getting help with it).

(It is actually atrocious and the developers are evidently not at all aware of typesetting either. I included constructive technical feedback.)

An OSS library I released got 17 GH stars within two days or so¹ :blobfoxnommobile:

¹ because I posted it to a newsletter where hundreds of people looked at it, but still, it counts :blobfoxuwu:

Flicker-warning: https://mastodon.social/@jwz/113539434774860654

It is trash and it is also the DVD player I could run as window manager in place of a desktop environment on short notice on a 1GB netbook that still had a VGA port to save a movie evening recently 😌

I'm trying to see if there's an update for my radio (SIRD 14 D1) and apparently Home Assistant is compatible with it. That's dangerous knowledge.

I've decided to send the reply envelopes of (physical) spam mail back empty from now on.

This costs the advertiser money as German law requires them to pay the postage fees for such responses.

This year is interesting regarding electricity prices. My provider keeps reducing the price by significant percentages.

All done and updated :blobfoxthumbsup:

Installed a few small extras too to play around with later. I've been meaning to get into the gemini protocol a little bit. (I do like (modern) HTTP, though.)

I think it's done compiling, but linking is taking ages. At least it's threaded (as far as that's possible on a Celeron).

At least I found a GUI software centre that can install into configuration.nix: https://snowflakeos.org/

And also set the kbd variant to us altgr-intl finally, tho I'll have to rebuild the config for that a second time since I edited them into it after starting the current process.

Something that's currently working for me is to break my large projects down into individually useful pieces:

I'll become strong -> I'll do push-ups today, …

I'll write a UI framework -> DI container, …

I'll get a job -> I'll update LinkedIn, …

I'll socialise more -> I'll hit "Chuff!" on this post, …

I'll sort out my flat -> … okay I'm still working on that one.

In part it's slow progress, but it still makes a difference and still works towards the changes I set out to make originally, overall, so I don't feel like I'm failing at things as much. Got some people helping with figuring out some of that though.

This is a good podcast episode on the breakdown of traditional media in the US, I think: https://truefans.fm/podcasting-20/673792d0d55de476b75ac227

Without me knowing the situation first-hand, of course.

I think they're mistaken about people not wanting unopinionated factual reporting though, because traditional news in the US is not unopinionated factual reporting.

We have that very prominently here in Germany and it remains fairly broadly popular and respected both in form of TV news and online reporting. (Of course it's like 10-15 minutes to cover all topics (or 35 for in-depth evening news) and has zero advertisements, so it's actually watchable.)

Itch.io now allows adding ActivityPub (well, at least Mastodon) and Bluesky handles to your profile!

Just did that~ Not this one though, my Itch page is age-gated for a reason.

I think the main problem is that the walls are all cold, so it feels much colder than the air temperature.
