Remember when children downloading MP3s to just jam out in the pre-streaming era were sued into oblivion? And now AI companies training on vast libraries of pirated, copyrighted data can just do that without repercussions.

The law never applies to those with money to evade it.

I hope someone does a post of all the weird and bad examples of AI art at CES because it is EVERYWHERE.

Google’s Nest Camera labeled person detection has a serious drift when it comes to recognizing people. Every person in my household has slowly become Barry, The Mailman. Without a reset every few months, Barry, The Mailman is the inevitable identity of all people it sees.

We all become Barry.

The growth-at-all-costs mindset of productized technology today cannot produce anything more sublime than living for even a few moments without the problems it causes and the continuous waves of awful solutions it further plasters on top of greed-derived defects.

Smother out that power button and whisper a “no” to the glowing display’s last few seconds of engagement-driven design, and swap scrolling for thinking — for a second, anyway.

A reminder this holiday season of the sheer joy, the thrill, and the utter contentment of just turning your phone off.

UNO reverse every push notification, email, and DM into an “I’ll check in later” and enjoy life.

I wonder if iPhone-to-Android switching has been impacted by Apple’s switch to eSIM and the fact that none of the US carriers provide an easy or secure solution to switch between device platforms with eSIM.

I would bet ecosystem switching that direction has seriously declined.

A note to media and influencers: if you register for CES with your personal email account, you are going to get pitches from PR to your personal email account — CES shares that data to countless contact databases.

Microsoft is entirely dashing Qualcomm’s hopes that their ARM chips might compete with MacBooks. Hope another partner can step up and deliver.

Ad density and layout on some of the publishers I used to enjoy are getting so bad that I don’t have any qualms whatsoever anymore about ad blocking.

This is wildly disrespectful to readers. And worse, imagine the experience for those on zoomed-in or older devices with smaller 16:9 displays!

I remember when technology used to bring me joy. Hell, it’s the reason I have the career I do. But I’d do just about anything to find a way to live without it now.

I poo poo the Mastodon development pace, but this actually is the sort of feature that people get excited about, and it’s a novel application of something folk are already familiar with in other contexts.

Genuine kudos.

Switched to an iPhone for a while, but I always forget that Apple cares more about its App Store partners’ ability to advertise at me than my own right to manage what interrupts my attention through easy notification channel management.

Don’t love the Apple Notification Spam Ecosystem.

As someone who unfortunately had to work for this company in the past, they are shitty, unethical people, and I am entirely unsurprised.

@ryne There’s a lot happening on both sides for each group to learn from, but the blinders on each side are real — Activitypub still doesn’t have basic features and spends too much time dithering with needless organizational overhead, and Bsky thinks they invented the decentralized social internet.

The platform discourse on Bluesky is pretty comic coming from Mastodon — pundits and armchair analysts think they invented wholly new takes about “protocols” and “federation,” fully ignoring a decade of prior work in the space. Hope they get the context soon!

I have embraced my inner boomer, and am Experiencing The Internet through a 16x9 iPhone SE. And let me tell you: If you think modern site design forces you to sift through endless ads to sort the chaff and dickbars and auto-play video bullshit from the increasingly sparse and lower-quality content, most websites are just a solid block of indistinguishable advertisements through the narrow view I have now!

My Pixel 9 Pro has sadly become a brick: All GMS/Play Services integration has spontaneously failed, and Android basically doesn't work without Google's proprietary bits.

Maybe a good time to switch to an iPhone anyway, given all the other changes happening — Apple Watch would be nice to use again.

Alright, time to make good on my promise to disconnect here. Call my partner if it's an emergency — if you don't know who that is or have their number, it probably isn't one.

I'm gonna spend some time offline for a while. 👋
