Toot

A reminder this holiday season of the sheer joy, the thrill, and the utter contentment of just turning your phone off.

UNO reverse every push notification, email, and DM into an “I’ll check in later” and enjoy life.

The growth-at-all-costs mindset of productized technology today cannot produce anything more sublime than living for even a few moments without the problems it causes and the continuous waves of awful solutions it further plasters on top of greed-derived defects.

Smother out that power button and whisper a “no” to the glowing display’s last few seconds of engagement-driven design, and swap scrolling for thinking — for a second, anyway.

@ryne Love this! The past couple of years I've been ruthless about notification permissions. If some app tries to use them to show me an ad, even once, then that shit is revoked. Same with unsubscribing from emails. An extra click or two, an extra ten seconds, and all of a sudden the communication medium that we've all written off as too noisy becomes actually quite manageable and delightful.

@ryan The thing on Android that bothers me the most is that apps that are some of the biggest notification/attention offenders are also the ones that don’t implement notification channel support for proper end-user adjustment/granular revocation!

I almost feel like, if the incentives can’t be found to force these devs to do it in the way that is best for users, maybe a UI change to make notification channel permissions even simpler could be handy and make them play ball.

@ryne Totally agree! I advocated prioritizing better channel support at Dropbox with the argument that if we didn't, customers would be incentivised to block all notifications wholesale. So it ends up being a win-win, we respect the customer and they let us continue to notify them about things that matter to them (which increases short and long term engagement...and feelings of not being a dick).
