Today in “That Actually Went Pretty Well," I bring you migrating from an old and busted Synology to a new(ish) model.

Because sometimes it feels like "that was easy" happens way too rarely in tech….

@caseyliss Heh. Now I'm listening to the follow-up, and if Milford was a potential "improvement," it's clear that even a really good antenna wouldn't help in his original location.

Plus, obviously, if using the VPN / browser works, you're golden. :)

@caseyliss Another possibility for your Giants HDTV problem - years ago when I was feeding OTA into my TiVo, I put a large (4’ square) HDTV antenna in my attic, along with an amplifier.

I live in Northern Virginia, and not only did I get all DC channels perfectly (from about 20 miles), I also received some Baltimore channels very well (50+ miles, and I wasn't even aimed optimally for them - they were 27º off-axis).

If your buddy is in SW CT, NYC channels may be viable. But if he's too far beyond Stamford…it'd probably be CT focused stations, which may push him into the Patriots market (nearly as bad as the Giants, but that's just an old Joe Gibbs fan talking…).

@caseyliss A few years back, were you having crazy lag problems with your bluetooth mouse or trackpad? I remember at the time, having similar issues that came and went with my magic trackpad, then they went away.

Lately, they've come back, and I don't know if it's a Sequoia thing, or an RF crowding thing, or an "I moved my mini just a little and now it's screwed up" thing…

Did you ever find a likely culprit? Or did it just start working again and you forgot about it?

I really need to learn how to network. I know (or am at least acquainted with) a whole lot of people in terrific positions in the infosec industry, but I just don't know how to approach them, or even how to get them to put my resume in front of a human.

Just verifying: There are no established email clients out there that let you use an IMAP server with “normal" folder structures, and also some kind of tagging system separate from folders, but available on multiple systems?

Looks like Postbox (built on Thunderbird) sorta does it, but all the tagging information is stored out-of-band (not on the server), and obviously web clients won't handle it.

It doesn't seem like there's any server-side support for tagging other than how Google does it, in lieu of folders (that is, you either get folders, or tags, but not both). Fastmail seems to do the same thing, likely the same way (so some clients built for Gmail might work with Fastmail. maybe.)

I just wanted to be sure that there isn't something magical and widely supported out there that I've missed, or if other web providers support even the current "standard” (I'm trying to avoid moving to Google).

(RT for reach? Thanks.)

The latest on my semi-obsession with the @greynoise ping storms. So far, I've figured out five different sorts of ping payloads. I think. It's all...weird.

@drdrang Update: I turned bluetooth back on at the phone, went into the watch app, and now I at least have a "Preparing" progress bar, at maybe 2/3 complete. No time estimate, but at least I have something to stare at now.

I turned off bluetooth on my phone (to make sure it didn't try to connect that way). Then, in settings on the watch (Ultra 1):enabled WiFi, then General -> Software Update. Took about 5 min to download the update. No ideas how long "preparing" is going to take, though.

I have to remind myself every year how to do this, hence the quote toot for others. :)
