Some kid at this caravan park has been given their school recorder already, and brought it with them to a beach holiday.

Pray for us.

We've had a few very big thunderclaps and close by lightning on Phillip Island, and now we've got super slow hail.

It's infrequent enough that some of the stupider birds are chasing after the hail as it bounces on the road, in case it's something more edible falling from the sky.

Everything is very two sided right now (well, the good things are. The bad things are just bad).

Hanging with my neighbour, good. Knowing that he is one of the many faces of the current housing crisis (no details here, that's his business), bad.

Growing veg, good. Knowing that it's getting harder to do with climate change, bad. Also, knowing from experience that we absolutely can't be self sufficient in the city, no matter what we grow, bad.

Spending time with friends and their kids (18 and 20 now, omg), hearing about all the young people stuff, good. Knowing that they're in for it, economically, ecologically, and socially (one is trans, the other is probably queer, but that's an educated guess on my part, he hasn't brought it up).

Unfortunately we don't have a lot of food overlap, he doesn't eat wheat (except a bit of bulgur), and we don't eat meat/eggs/dairy.

But we can continue swapping salads :)

Nothing like a morning of cultural exchange to lighten the spirit.

My Syrian neighbour made me coffee, and we drank it and ate dates while we swapped phrases, he practiced his English and I learned some words in Arabic, and then we swapped vegetables from our gardens.

Don't worry, fellow fitness enthusiasts. My back loves walking, tolerates running, swimming and dancing, and thrives in weight lifting.

Just not yoga.

I did one (1) yoga class this time last week, and I've been suffering since. Too many forward folds, too much down dog. I can't stretch my back that way and hope to avoid consequences any more.

Don't fuck around with disc injuries, even fairly old ones. I thought it was healed, but I thought wrong.

It'll come good again, I just have to do all the physio.

I'm a bit sad to lose yoga though. I used to love it. I had given it up last year after a month of daily yoga screwed up my wrists.

It's also a little funny, given how many people suggest yoga as gentle exercise to cure all ills. Lol, not for mobile hips, stretchy wrists and a bulging disc.

Do you have a #baking schedule for the week (or longer)?

I'm trying to figure out the best timing for my little household. Maybe I'm just a bit too tired today, but it's starting to feel like a high school maths problem.

If two people can eat 5 slices of bread a day combined, and on Mondays they want wholegrain but on Fridays they want ciabatta, and sometimes croissants ...

  1. Fun colleagues.

  1. The song Ready to go, by Republica.

  1. Neighbours sharing vegetables. I got a giant bag of capsicum and cucumber today, and some chillies from the other neighbour last week. Tomorrow I'll share corn and zucchini.

I didn't get a photo, but had lunch at Easy Vegan, a Vietnamese place on Victoria Street.

We ordered an avo smoothie and a custard apple smoothie with lunch. They were good independently, but the young guy working there brought us an extra cup and told us to mix them together - divine!

They'll have you on *organ-cooking amounts of caffeine and calorie restrictions so low you'll get sick if you stick to it (but you won't, because it's silly).

Or a tonne of animal protein (with associated heart problems), and no carbs.

Maybe you'll lose weight, maybe not. But even if you do, it doesn't tend to stick, it can damage your insulin resistance, and it'll make you a miserable bastard who's no fun at parties. And can trigger disordered eating.

Definitely, definitely ignore any nutrition advice you get at a gym though.

I studied nutrition at a certificate level (low), and none of my colleagues even did that much. Everything I heard from my gym colleagues was appalling.

They know what they're on about for basic injury avoidance though, mostly.

The worst is watching dudes with bad form instruct their girlfriends.

It looks so miserable.

If you are a dude with a girlfriend, it's still better she sees a trainer one time to start. Or even just read a women's training online magazine. You probably lift things compensating with muscles she can't rely on, and she could hurt a wrist/elbow/shoulder.

Also, she needs way more lower body weight and has more endurance. Probably.

I truly struggle not to intervene when I see newbies at the gym using dangerously bad form.

If it's one person, especially younger men or any women, I sometimes will offer a little guidance. But I hate being that guy™️.

And I've lost patience for having the 'splaining come back at me by dudes who feel weird getting advice from a lady, do I'm very much less likely to do it for them now.

Anyway, ask the gym for a program if you're new, please. It's worth putting up with the discomfort or weird vibe, if you can. Listen to the form guidance, ignore any nutrition or supplement tips.

Signed, former personal trainer (long ago)
