Why yes Google, I would like to improve performance by paying you $10 a month more for... one fewer CPU core.

I was slightly dismayed to receive an email from LetsEncrypt this week telling me that they're stopping email alerts for close-to-expired certs; I've got all my certs set up to autorenew, but I've got 22 LetsEncrypt certs at the moment, installed by four different pieces of software. Once or twice a year, one of them goes wrong, and I've been relying on the emails prompt me to fix it manually. So I decided to sit down and write my own monitor for it, only to find that prometheus' blackbox exporter has it built in, so that saved some time (although only a little, because I hate writing promql). Anyway, I now have all my webservers being scraped for their certificates, and the "Not After" value (converted to unix time) stored. I've then got an alert to send me an email if any of the expiry dates are within seven days of today, which should hoepfully replicate the LetsEncrpt alerts.

Oh, and before I praise Fairphone too much, twelve fucking quid of P + P for a usb c port is obscene. Sort it out.

So I'm back on my #OnePlus 7T until #Fairphone ship me a new usb-c port >.<
I have two thoughts on this:
1: The 7T is still a fine phone, and if it was still getting updates, I'd likely never have stopped using it.
Bloody stupid my bank, and environmentally toxic from oneplus.

The problem with writing this in a commit message visible to the entire company is that occasionally it does work first time. I'm off to find an edible hat...

Although I guess I do still have huge archives of old email to get out of various Gmail accounts, so still not done yet. Data Sovereignity is hard when you've spent 15 years spreading it all over the internet :/

Migrated my #Nexcloud server from my VPS to my home self-hosting cluster today. It was the last 'big' thing I needed to move off the VPS, and I'd delayed so long because I wanted certainty my 3-2-2-1 backup was working.
I'm now happy my data is safe enough (although I wish Hetzner storage box supported 'append-only' Borg, but the offline backup should compensate for that), so that's the last big tranche of unencrypted personal data off of being stored on Someone Else's Computer.

Me: I can't drink Monster on my new meds, so I'll play a game to keep my mind off the caffeine withdrawal. I know, I haven't played Death Stranding yet, so I'll give that a go.

Now I'm not saying my friends and I are ever so slightly pedantic, but I was phoned today, while I was at work, to adjudicate an argument between my friend as his wife over what the upper bounnd is for what you can refer to as 'scores of '
(The upper bound is 100, and I won't be taking questions on how I decided this)

[#]Fortinet have dropped 29 security updates today, 14 of which are rated "high" or "critical". Have fun everyone. (Fortunately, only one 'low' affects our stuff but FFS, come on)

This probably should have happened as soon as threads came out, today's news isn't making Meta meaningfully worse, because it was already a cesspool, but the best time was years ago, the seconds best time is... Etc etc.

Having slept on it, I've suspended my sponsorship of #Mastodon on Patreon until mastodon.social and mastodon.online defederate from #Threads. I still believe in paying for the development of Mastodon, but the sponsorship page specifically lists that it's also used to pay or the infrastructure of those sites. Having .social federated to Threads is providing value, no matter how small, to #Meta, and I don't want any portion of my money (again no matter how small) going towards that.

The problem with having a #Beagle and a #Labrador is thus: sometimes, you will get home from work 10 minutes after your partner goes on an hour-long video call, with the dogs purported feeding time being inside those 10 minutes. If you don't remember to explicitly communicate before hand, the dogs will insist they haven't been fed, and your stuck between deciding to feed them twice, or make them wait over an hour for dinner.
I fed them.
I'll update you later on whether they were lying to me.

Did I just push a noop change to my website's git repo just so the automated build system would update the copyright date on my website? Yes. Yes I did, 'cos seeing 2025 on there feels like THE FUTURE.

I've been meaning to try out @michael's #FediFetcher, and I finally got around to it after Christmas, and folks, it's a game changer if you're on a single-user instance. It massively reduces the number of times I need to go off-instance to see replies to posts. Fully recommended. (Note for people who are worried: it does no scraping, it just talks to your server's API and causes it to sync posts the regular way it would if you searched for them. For details, see https://blog.thms.uk/fedifetcher)

My eldest nibling is 19, and she doesn't remember a time when you'd send a 'happy new year!' text, and it would take like 6 hours to come through. I feel aged.

Fuck fireworks. Sincerely a terrified 10-year-old Labrador I'm currently cuddling.
If you must have fireworks on New year's Eve, can you at least all do them at the same time at midnight, not slowly spread out from quarter past fucking six onwards.
