My colleagues at the RSPB are designing a new way of thinking about keeping dogs away from beach nesting birds, using scent. If you're a dog owner in the UK, can you fill in this survey?

A tracking study has found that dogs walked off-lead cause significantly more disturbance on lowland heaths than pets kept on the lead.

https://www.birdguides.com/articles/dog-tracking-study-reveals-disturbance-to-lowland-heaths/

"It was found that 85% of the tracked dogs were walked off-lead in the breeding season despite signage requesting owners not to let their pets run free due to ground-nesting birds. At Snelsmore Common, Berkshire, more than 90% of the site was disturbed by dogs, reducing its conservation value."

NABU, the German BirdLife Partner (so the German equiv of the RSPB) has left X.com

https://www.nabu.de/presse/pressemitteilungen/index.php?popup=true&show=42522&db=presseservice

"The NABU federal association is ceasing its activities on the social network X with immediate effect. This decision is based on the conviction that open and diverse debate spaces are essential for positive social development, the promotion of engagement and the protection of nature and the climate - a claim that, in NABU's eyes, X no longer lives up to."

Like the bsky account says, we can have sympathy but no one is above the law. We work hard to get wildlife crime taken seriously, you can't then just turn a blind eye to someone breaking the law if they're "on our side"

Derek Gow on BBC 1 at 0845 this morning publicly admitting on national television what we all know - he's responsible for the illegal beaver releases over the decades. He was named to me by the bloke who lives in Ruigh Aiteachain bothy as doing lynx releases in the Cairngorms too..

"Red squirrel colony discovered in North Yorkshire"

There are reds within a few miles, and a local volunteer has been "managing non-native grey squirrels" allowing the reds to move in ❤️

Found another lovely old walking routes book on archive.org - "Fifty Two Northumbrian Walks" by Ken Bunn, published in 1991. This has to be one of the loveliest old walking books I've found so far, utterly delightful!

Also nice to see this gang, possibly conservation grazing.. not sure what breed they are though? Tiny little things and jet black, size of Soays but looked too smart

Time for the BTO's Winter Gull Survey this evening, as usual all the gulls on the pond lifted and went to roost elsewhere so just a zero count, but how nice to have an excuse to sit in a hide and watch ducks for a couple of hours!

Lovely story on the socials today about one of the Spine Race runners coming across a lost dog at Auchope, high in the Cheviots. She took time to make a lead and bring it to the nearest safety team who worked to track down the owner. The runner got a time credit and it's an all-round lovely story..

..except it's blatantly one of the fox hounds from the College Valley hunt. No-one cares about that dog, he would have been better off kept by the Safety Team after all.
