Also means: hoodlum, rascal.
I'm tempted to start using this in English, as in, "Sir, you are nothing but a roaming eel."

My parents (in their 80s and 90s) moved to a new home two days ago, in small town Yorkshire, after a quarter century out in a pretty remote village. I video-called them today, and my mum was buzzing. “We’ve been out to the coffee shop! We went to the Park Run! I’m going to volunteer!” It was the cutest thing.

This June, at Wind&Bones, we'll be publishing the paperback edition of Tâigael: Stories from Taiwanese and Gaelic, supported by a #ScottishConnections grant. Four writers, four stories, and four languages. And we couldn't love the cover more. #Taiwan #Scotland #Gaelic #Tâigí.
Our writers are the brilliant Elissa Hunter-Dorans, Kiú-kiong (玖芎), Lisa MacDonald, and Naomi Sím (沈宛瑩).

It's the Lunar New Year, so here in #Taiwan, our neighbours are celebrating in the traditional fashion: by repeatedly playing a melancholy and halting rendition of Jingle Bells on some kind of xylophone.

Any folks in #Taipei, I'm doing a reading tomorrow at the #Taiwan #Literature Base / 台灣文學基地. Along with Dr. Hannah Stevens, I'll be reading short stories, an extract from a new novel (featuring spoonbills!), and a translation from Taiwanese of a fabulous story by Naomi Sím.
It's at 2pm, and all are welcome. We'll have some snacks, too — because literature is hungry work.
More details here. You can sign up in advance, or just turn up on the day.

Just received a letter from a fifth grader who has read one of the #philosophy encyclopedias I worked on as a writer/editor. She got in touch to tell me that philosophy has made her life more fun, but now she's having difficulty focussing in class, because she only wants to think about philosophy.

Are there any #Taiwanese / #台語 / #taigi speakers who can help me with some Taiwanese onomatopoeia for a story I'm writing? I need the sounds of:

On this occasion, the conversation ended with the driver pulling up outside our house, and then whipping off his shoe to prop his foot up on the taxi window, and show me his severed toe.

Another day, another Tainan taxi driver confiding in me about his messy divorce. If this keeps up, I’m going to have to start charging for my in-car counselling services.

I'm introducing musical breaks for my online classes with my students at Parami Uni. First up, I'll be subjecting them to Taiwan's palaeontologically-obsessed scamps, The Dinosaur's Skin 恐龍的皮, and their jaunty hit Jurassic Ride.

Perhaps, in retrospect, it was not wise to opt for this place solely on the basis that their Facebook page featured an in-house cat, whom they referred to as their 'store manager' or 店長 diànzhǎng.

It's been a long week, so we went for a massage here in #Tainan. Hannah, my partner, seemed to be having a relaxing, quiet time over on her side of the room. Meanwhile, over on my side of the room, a boisterous auntie was walking up and down my spine, while giving an excitable lecture in Mandarin on the life and habits of the German cockroach.

At the dress rehearsal of a contemporary dance festival at the Wansha Performing Arts Centre in #tainan, where I’ve been invited to be philosopher in residence for the evening. It’s all kind of intriguing. I’m currently formulating some vaguely philosophical thoughts to share.

Just found out there is a temple in Penghu that has an annual festival where they build a giant turtle out of cabbages. And, well… let’s just say that I know what I’ll be doing next February. #taiwan
