Second #newread of the year, Cory Doctorow's 'Craphound' which is a neat little short story that you can nab for free on Project Gutenberg for a variety of E-Reader formats (or you can just read it in a browser). I like Cory's writing a lot: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/17026

So in our staff briefing our senior management team decided that because no one said they were suffering from stress, work pressure or burnout in 2023, there's no reason why they should be suffering from those things in 2024. Well ex-fucking-scuse ME perhaps it relates to the fact that between 2023 and 2024 the stupid fuckwits stuck their brown noses right up the arse of 'Agile' and insisted that all projects ran using it. Which increased the levels of stress exponentially!

First of the "Not read before" books for 2025 is this one. It's a little 'all over the place' but the core message is fairly riveting and horrific, but the sort of thing you could see happening in the US quite easily, given how utterly stupid the voting public seem to be. Someone told me it was #Goblinweek on arty Mastodon so I figured these might suit the theme...

Whenever I think about federated platforms like Pixelfed and Mastodon, I keep thinking of "Sandbenders" - the mythical hardware platform in William Gibson's cyberpunk novels, which always sparked my imagination.

Imagine upgrading individual components of your phone to zsush 'em up rather than buying a whole new phone every time some flavour of Android / iOS ages out your current hardware needlessly. I guess you get this with Linux on PCs but would love to see the same approach for phones

Trying to make a habit of boosting / faving interesting looking accounts. I might not always follow you instantly (i'm a bit coy, so usually a 'follaback' kind of guy) but if I think you look cool or your interests are awesome I'm gonna boost ya

Looks like it's time to get rid of my car. At 15 years old it's done well but EVs are becoming more reasonably priced in my neck of the woods, so if anyone's got any gotchas to look out for, for a first timer switching from Petrol I'm all ears.

Why do I love Mastodon? Severe lack of influencer types. Unless you know otherwise, they don't tend to fetch up on these shores. And you know what? That's why I'll never bother with anything like Bluesky or X or Threads ever again, I really do not miss those vapid cockwombles, much happier with quirky crafty sciencey chatty folk instead.

To counter the food grumbles, tonight's dinner was awesome, cooked alongside my awesome daughter. Ponyo Ramen (minus the haaaaaaaam) with a side of crispy seaweed and corn on the cob. Superb!

Would not be the least bit surprised if GTAVI ended up being the "first £100 game" as Take Two have always been greedy moneygrabbing gits, and would think nothing of making sure that the rest of the industry followed that price tag. Higher point of entry price won't save the industry though. Perhaps stopping the endless pointless remasters / reboots and investing more effort in cheaper original games might be the key, y'know, kinda what the indie gaming scene has been doing for aeons.

Back to work for the first time in 2025. Long absence made me realise what retirement could be like and dang it’s tempting…

I love the London Underground. Yes, it may be crowded, often stinky, broiling hot in summer, but it's so much more than just a method of getting from A to B. There's something magical about descending into the earth in one place and then arriving and ascending into somewhere entirely different

Took the car out for the first time in about three weeks and was surprised it turned over first time ( Nissan knew how to make reliable cars before they clambered into bed with Renault). But the highlight of the journey was rediscovering Diesel Park West on my Spotify playlist, a hugely underrated band imho https://open.spotify.com/track/3aHRnpx735KUEjugKgjf7k?si=jck0oUJDSMG8XE37PrT-Nw&context=spotify%3Aplaylist%3A1CzXocgLCfOaYyYJn9f7ip

New nforced diet regime is sucky. No dairy (don't get me started on "vegan cheese") and nothing sbove 2g of saturated fat per 100g. Not quite at the "licking rocks" stage but the reality of trying to do this as someone who previously enjoyed food (not to excess, just enjoyed) is fecking miserable. Salutes to anyone going through similar for health reasons

Labour really are just as shite as the Tories aren’t they. The utter bullshit around that AI announcement could easily have come out of Sunak’s gob back in the day. Why do people think AI will miraculously “fix” things that proper manpower and resourcing would actually fix?

Aside from a few technical / framerate issues (which I guess probably won't affect PS5 Pro players, rot their eyes!) I'm really enjoying Test Drive Solar Crown. A lot less faff and annoyance than The Crew Motorfest but not quite as slick as Forza Horizon, but the actual mix of racing styles is great, and the handling model really is excellent
