Sitka's recent internet outage provides another example of how resilience can work in communities when infrastructure fails.

Specifically:

  1. The town doesn't immediately descend into lawless chaos. In no case has anyone mentioned that a gun was useful.

  1. Resilience centers (mostly libraries, but also some individual homes) provide missing services to the community, and then become places where the community meets and connects as people.

Currently reading @hober 's beautifully-rendered Federalist Papers site for the American Politics class I'm taking.

Thanks again for building this, Tess.

I assume I'm late to this, but #Wikipedia put this delightful German tongue twister Tiktok sensation Barbara's Rhubarb Bar in front of me this morning, and I'm still happily lost in it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbara%27s_Rhubarb_Bar

Haven't even listened to the song. Don't need to.

Yep, here's an image of the original ad: https://images.tedium.co/uploads/Rainbow-Technologies-Dongle-Ad.jpg That's definitely where I read it originally, and Don Gall has lived rent-free in my head ever since.

Today I learned that the word “dongle" did not in fact come from the name "Don Gall". That was an urban legend started by a 1992 ad in Byte magazine, which is probably where I came across it.

Sometimes the truth can be disappointing.

The author even drops in ludicrous claims like “your physics lecture delivered by Albert Einstein”, handwaving AI to make that seem even remotely plausible.

The author is probably being fed this stuff by the company pushing the new tech, but that doesn’t excuse such an uncritical take.

I often like how thoughtful the Guardian is in its reporting, but this one’s a mess.

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2024/jan/21/hologram-lecturers-thrill-students-at-trailblazing-uk-university

It conflates an incremental improvement in display tech with some radical increase in student engagement, as though the trouble with university lectures is that the professor isn’t visible in enough detail.
