sunrise this morning, outside #Asheville, looking west (the sun is behind me in the picture, lighting up a frosty hillside on the opposite horizon)

Not finding it now, but saw a post earlier with the suggestion that the English word "sneeze" derives from a misreading of the Old English "fnesen" — since an initial or medial "s" came for a time to be written like this: ʃ

I'm reminded of that as I'm seeing the "long s" in this droll passage from Voltaire, regarding Socrates' daimon.

MM McCabe's translation of that saying from Heraclitus [B93]:

The lord whose oracle is at Delphi neither speaks nor remains silent but gives a sign.

huh ... was checking the etymology for "sema" ... in connection with this saying from Heraclitus ...

"The lord whose oracle {manteĩón} is the one in Delphi neither says {légei} nor conceals {crýptei}, but gives a sign {semaínei}."

... I didn't expect to find that it's ultimately related to the word "Zen":

[etymoline:] ... from Sanskrit dhyana "thought, meditation," from PIE root *dheie- "to see, look" (source also of Greek sēma "sign, mark, token;" see semantic).

🙂 🙏

This is kind of tricky to put into words well, so I invite you to regard the following like a poem, especially the first word:

I look at things in #meditation

not so much to see things I look at

but to see the looking

I've studied and practiced #contemplative traditions rather intensively for a long time.

And it seems to me the heart of those traditions and their practice is something both elusive and simple:

the utter wonder that anything at all is happening.

And a best way to realize and honor and appreciate that, is, as #Zen teacher Mazu put it, to just "not contrive."

It's always already this — before we have a plan, or a theology, or even any thought-up ideas.

Though perhaps a little odd-sounding, in tonight's #meditation the profoundly matter-of-fact sense for me was that #Zen is about getting where you are.

I've been reading about Heraclitus, who of course was famous for saying things like we can't step into the same river twice. And a reason for that is a river isn't a thing. A river isn't a fixed being. It's a process. "River" is a name which we give to a flow. A river is an event.

And in tonight's #meditation I had that same sense — of how the self, the feeling and the appearance of "me" and of "mine," is an event.

In tonight's #meditation the sense arose that trying to appreciate meditative process by attending to the thoughts and sensations that occur is like attempting to follow a football game by watching the scoreboard.

It's a deep and many-layered topic, but in tonight's #meditation there was a sense for a way the idea and truth of grace makes a lot of sense. And a kind of simple sense.

What I seek in meditation, what I look to appreciate, to connect with, to be a part of and an expression of — is already true.

And appreciating, connecting, being a part and an expression — they all come from that.
