The important thing for the new writer (in my personal advice and experience) is to begin to carve out space and time to practice writing without constraints and see what you enjoy.

Experimenting and having fun with writing is a great way to get started.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub Jan 26- If people tell you they've always wanted to write, what do you say to them?

I gently nudge them towards keeping a journal of ideas with the key element being: "write for yourself first".

As much as people want to write for other people, it's important to write without thinking about outside opinions until you're able to feel comfortable* with your own writing process.

This is especially true in this moment.

I'm reminded of this section from Reading Lolita in Tehran because it encapsulates something worth remembering.

Like Humbert, Trump doesn't like when his fantasy world is disrupted by reality. They share other similarities and it's important to see how the two relate. How we're being pulled into someone else's fantasy because they refuse to accept reality.

It gives insight into the response to the Bishop's words and all that we'll continue to see.

And, I want to add, we will always need creative people to do their creative work.

The internal work, the ability to articulate things that many people feel but cannot express, the willingness to be vulnerable--these are vital for humanity. This is how we learn to be human and to strive for more than brutal zero sum games that dehumanize us and destroy the fragile things we build to protect those we love.

The stories are the pretty part but we labor to get there.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub Jan 17: What are your biggest fears for the writing world in 2025?

That my fellow creative folks will lose heart.

This is a fear in any year. Though some writers have the support systems they need to weather any personal or larger scale challenges, many don't and many are taught to go it alone. Many are encouraged to give up on creating for a number of reasons and it takes a constant routine + willpower to keep that up. It becomes harder when there's too much friction.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub Jan 16: How would you describe the way you create your stories to a non-writer?

I'd explain it as being similar to cooking. I start with basic ingredients and once that's comfortable I begin to experiment. Sometimes stuff gets burned or the seasoning isn't right but I keep at it, trying to find just the right balance. Plus, I get to sample along the way.

If I had to explain verbally though, I'm not sure I'd manage to rub two words together.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub Nov 26. What's the best feedback you've ever received on your writing?

Someone I admired told me that my work had inspired him.

I quit writing for awhile for other reasons and when I rediscovered the note it helped me to return to writing.

It was just the fact that my writing had connected and had some small impact. For me that's the most important feedback.

I keep the note in my journal cover to remind me to keep doing what I need to so that I keep writing.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub Sep 18: Do you believe the magic happens in the edit, or do you have a different approach?

I think magic happens all along the journey.

But edits are absolutely where you clean up some messes, tuck a few things out of sight and make everything a little tighter so that the full story feels more magical.

Arguably a lot of less impressive storytelling isn't given enough time to do this. Often it's still good but lacks the magic of extra time to work.
