My apologies for the extended downtime, it looks like at 01:52 today UK Time the site went down, from what I can see it looks as if it's due to an issue communicating and authenticating with the database service but I need to do some more digging and try to figure out what went wrong. We're currently catching up on all content we know about and will probably be playing catchup for the next day or so.

For those curious, this is everything in the last 30 mins not tagged as Windows 10 (But that is Windows). A Mix of 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 8.1. Windows 7 being the larger chunk on the Windows side there.

I'm feeling the need to ask who it is that accesses one of my Fedi sites using Windows 2000 and is apparently using Internet Explorer 5.01 to do it.
I'll forgive the folks that are apparently using XP to access the site on IE 7,8 and Flock.
Oh and this is all in about the last 20 mins so it's recent traffic.

I'm currently tinkering trying to get better observability and monitoring working for my Mastodon servers, it's been a bit of a gap that I've not had the time (or energy frankly) to address up to now but with my new job being in a tech stack that is pretty heavy on observability being something that we shout about and with the fact I have less and less time to server hop trying to debug issues it felt like now was the right time (Combined with Uptime Robot being scummy).
So far I've got our web monitors not just moved over but with much (much) better observability than we had before and more active monitoring so I'll get a page if the monitors start to detect. outages. The system is also set to try to flag where we might drop under a 99% uptime in a given 30 day rolling window, I'm not sure if I'll report on it overall very much, but is certainly something I'm keen to try to achieve within the limitations of this not being my full time job!

From the very rough napkin math I've done, If I bought a fair old chunk of kit (Nearly £17k worth in just hardware) I'd be better off from the savings of what the current monthly outgoings are in around 2 years, which makes a lot of assumptions and I'm hoping a lot of those assumptions are more worst case than reality would be.
I'm most certainly not in a position to just drop £17k on new server kit right now and have some fairly major personal priorities first, but moving towards this new setup does look a lot more likely and a lot more financially viable and would end up reducing my monthly costs even if there are some huge up front costs I need to find.

I'm finding myself spending more and more time looking at the finances and having to think and care about cashflow (Having started working for my own company and delivering contracts for customers in December).
It's kinda terrifying in a lot of ways, it certainly doesn't take a lot for the numbers to suddenly show things are trending to the red and needing to figure out what's happened and why. On the bright side it has prompted me to figure out most of when I plan to not be working for the next financial year so I could make sure I can continue to pay my own wages.
It has also prompted me to continue seriously thinking about getting the most value from my money, up to now large financial lump sum investments into what I'm doing hosting Mastodon just hasn't been practical for a whole host of reasons, but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't looking a bit more viable and a lot more tempting.

I think one of my highlights of the days I work from home is being able to turn up my Spotify in my office and just enjoy the speakers I bought a while ago.
I do however dread to think how loud these could go, the speakers themselves are set to 50% volume, my mixer is set to about 15% and it's already more than loud enough (well it's probably already too loud but I'm enjoying it)

Just as an addition on this as well.
If you were expecting a reply (or never got a confirmation) when you e-mailed our support e-mail, please please please check your junk / spam.
E-Mail is difficult to get right and even though I'm confident all our settings are as they should be, I know sometimes it doesn't stop e-mail providers doing weird and wonderful things. I can confirm at this point we have no open support requests and that anything recent has been replied to or resolved. If you haven't had a reply and are expecting one please double check your junk / spam as I suspect you'll see the reply from me there as well as links to view the ticket on our ticketing service.

I've increased the maximum post length here on #MastodonAppUK from 500 characters to 1000 characters which happens to align us with what the #Universeodon instance was already running.
I'm not strongly against increasing that number further but given it may break some of the UI's and ways things are displayed, I'm reluctant to do so without a really good reason and I think for most things, 1000 characters in a given posts should be more than enough.
Let me know if anything breaks / things look weird and I'll shrink it back down if we need!

Not sure if anyone can / would like them but we've been getting hello fresh boxes recently and have a load of vouchers. As far as I'm aware we get nothing from them but if anyone was thinking about it and wanted a free box help yourselves.

There is nothing more satisfying than having exactly enough milk left in the fridge for the perfect coffee.
Today, a popcorn mocha.
So far it's pretty good. Not sure it's something I'd drink often but a nice treat.

I've gone through and bulk closed a lot of tickets on our e-mail support queue, apologies if there are folks that still do need assistance but I've closed everything over 4 months old because there's no chance I'm going to meaningfully catch it up and a lot of the time I do suspect it's either resolved already or a non-issue at this point. Please do re-open the request or e-mail us again if you do need support, I am going to try to be a lot better at keeping on top of the queues this year.

We're still seeing increased rates of new accounts on #MastodonAppUK and #Universeodon - We are seeing with this an uptick in more "Advanced" spam accounts which are a bit harder to spot and it is taking me a bit longer than usual to get rid of such accounts. Please be assured this is something we're aware of and tracking and for every account that does make it past our existing security setup we're enhancing the protections to prevent future spam signups :)

We've seen a small surge in registrations across both our sites, so welcome to those of you just joining us either on #MastodonAppUK or #Universeodon
If you're coming from Twitter and are looking for a theme / site that looks a bit more similar to what you're used to, the #Elk interface looks similar in a lot of ways and might help ease the move over to these parts of the internet!

That should be everything for now, I do have more work (as always) that I need to do but we are now up to date on the latest security release for Mastodon and as far as I can see everything is up and running as expected.

The majority of the upgrade work is now complete. I'm just finishing the updates on the content processing nodes and then we should be good to rock and roll!

I'm going to be updating #MastodonAppUK and #Universeodon to the latest Mastodon releases shortly. I'm not expecting there to be any real outage as it should be a case of doing some restarts, there might be a short delay in some of our content processing while I run through everything but I'm not expecting any major issues (hopefully!)

I'm going to in the next few days figure out the best way to communicate this to those directly affected but I will be closing down our #Pixelfed instance from May 1st 2025 following the abusive behaviour of the Pixelfed primary developer and creator recently and my lack of ongoing confidence and being unable to support hosting software maintained by individuals that again do not share the values I hold or that I see as important for the sites I look after.
