There are some pretty cellular automata on a hexagonal grid too.

First mass production of rule 105 pieces.

Not totally happy with the paint job – the masking paper curled under the water-based paint and some paint got underneath the edges. Is there laser-cuttable (not PVC) self-adhesive plastic film?

Fourth iteration, single-layer cellular automaton puzzle piece prototypes, for checking if these shapes work at the planned size (20×20 mm pixels). The top ones (rule 73) need some tweaks, there’s too much that can be forced together in ways that it shouldn’t. The bottom ones (rule 105) feel quite nice.

I realized that I don’t even need two layers! It can be done with one. For two pieces to communicate, they don’t necessarily need to touch – the information can be relayed by a common neighbor.

In this example, the colors from the top and top-right neighbors are conveyed by direct touch, the one from the top-left neighbor relayed by the left neighbor, whose right edge mirrors its top edge.

Still doodling around to find nice shapes.

Iteration 3 of the cellular automaton puzzle pieces assembled. Fixed the precision problems by using the more precise Trotec laser cutter and by gluing them back-to-back so the taper of the kerf (which is minimal though compared to the Lasersaur) goes in opposite directions. But I’m still not done yet, because…

CNC-milled some iteration two cellular automaton puzzle pieces. They look fantastic and I am happy with the shape, they slot together very satisfyingly, but the milling job alone for 16 pieces was over 3 hours. That’s not going to cut it for mass production.

Flaws to be fixed in the next iteration:

• It’s too much work to produce.

• The middle layer is redundant.

• In some valid arrangements, the pieces don’t hold together.

• The laser cut and manual gluing is too imprecise, some pieces don’t go together smoothly.

Prototype: Puzzle pieces that encode in their shapes the rules of an elementary cellular automaton.

Once you choose the pieces in the top row, and take care that the left and right edges match up, the whole arrangement is uniquely determined, and interesting patterns appear.
