Iteration 3 of the cellular automaton puzzle pieces assembled. Fixed the precision problems by using the more precise Trotec laser cutter and by gluing them back-to-back so the taper of the kerf (which is minimal though compared to the Lasersaur) goes in opposite directions. I realized that I don’t even need two layers! It can be done with one. For two pieces to communicate, they don’t necessarily need to touch – the information can be relayed by a common neighbor.
In this example, the colors from the top and top-right neighbors are conveyed by direct touch, the one from the top-left neighbor relayed by the left neighbor, whose right edge mirrors its top edge.
Still doodling around to find nice shapes.
