Was scratching my head for days why my core NTP server, which is also the internally authoritative DNS provider, couldn't resolve hostnames from its ntp.conf on startup, only literal IP addresses.
Not actually listing it in its own resolver configuration, might just possibly have been at the root of it.
D'oh!

Obviously there's context missing, so I may be off beam, but even to my eyes this seems something of a ridiculous conviction.

Naturally the metro went to town on the language...

Oooh. On Wednesday evening, the ISS may be visible directly over London, if skies are clear. (Unlikely, given the weather forecast - we're expecting cloud cover most of the week and sleet during the day on Wednesday.)

Any food chemists out there?
Question for you if there are: why, when cooking dried pulses like lentils, split peas or chick peas does the first stage of the boil produce a gummy frothy scum on the surface of the water?
I'd really like to understand.

"Don't use AI to {something}. I can spot that a mile off", says the expert.
OK, and what about the ones you don't spot? That's success bias talking, right there.
It's in the same realm as claiming there are no perfect crimes. Of course that's an absurd statement to make. The very definition of a perfect crime would be one that was undetectable.

Facebook's rationale for not acting on abuse reports:
"We use technology to help prioritise reports for review.
As our review team is focused on the most severe cases with potential for real world harm, we're not able to review your report."
Apparently reporting acts of fraud and the accounts committing those acts don't fall into the category of "real world harm".

As a user I'm on Facebook, now, only because it's an ugly necessity. It's insinuation into our lives as a primary communication medium for arranging social and entertainment events makes it very hard to detach from. I can't help wondering, though, that as poor as current moderation is how much worse worse things are about to become with the shift in moderation policy, as Zuckerbot tries to curry favour with the tangerine troll.

As time has gone on I have had less and less regret about that, reaching zero some years ago.
I'm now reaching the point where my regrets are negative: i.e. I'm genuinely glad I can't - even in the smallest way - be held accountable.

When Facebook was recruiting for their first engineering team here in the UK, I got a call canvassing me for a CV and offering an interview. Having already seen the ruts in the road I'd already made some highly critical posts, on Facebook itself, and two weeks later the offer was rescinded.
I have always inferred that, having received my CV they did a superficial background check and found my derisive posts.

"π‘ Tip of the week π‘
The best way to prevent type 2 diabetes is to eat a lower-carb diet with minimal ultra-processed foods (the Second Nature guidelines will help)."
WTF are "ultra-processed" foods? How about a definition (which of course doesn't exist; it's a term bandied about by health "influencers" with no real meaning).

The thing is the prompt refinements were not for aesthetics, they were to correct blatant flaws in the output, and every "fix" briught with it other errors which got progressively worse. The thing gets about 80% of the way there, but gets the other 20% stunningly wrong: two tables when one was requested; decorations when they were explicitly deprecated; six-toed feet; an ash tray on the floor not the table; a table with a doily frill materialising around it but a polished top... it's dreadful.

The state of visual generative AI is quite laughable at present.
I would never use it for anything of substance, on principle, seeing as it is based on stolen data, or at very least content obtained through legalese and broken promises. Nevertheless, just for giggles I tried to get Dall-E to produce something to a very specific brief. Despite giving it 4 further refinements (the daily limit, apparently) it was still inadequate.

The #TikTok format is ridiculous. It's almost like there's an advantage to the media industry to train short attention spans and poor critical thinking.
Oh, wait...

Am I anti-semitic? No, I bloody well am not. I'm anti-faith/anti-religion as a supportable framework for rational behaviour, so there's that, but no I'm not anti-semitic.
Am I anti-Zionist? You bet the fuck I am. I have no sympathy for expansionism.

Went to #JohnLewis in #Kingston yesterday. They have closed off all access to the riverside, which apart from anything else means you can't get to/from the cafe from the riverside it overlooks. (It used to be possible to enter/exit from either side of the through road.) Apparently, it's to mitigate theft from the tech zone. Well perhaps they ought not to have placed the tech zone on the ground floor near public access.

Android: Repeating event cannot begin in the past.
Why not? Why bloody not? Suppose past events have already happened, but I want to keep record of the series, and continue them on the calendar.
I hate software designers who can't see past their own use case. Query it, by all means, but don't tell me I flat out can't do it.

Someone needs to take #Facebook to court for actively facilitating #fraud, whilst shying away from the responsibility. They've taken to claiming insufficient resources to investigate reports against very clear and obvious #scams or outright criminal solicitation, and placing their arcane (and insufficient) "Community Standards" above criminal law. Trouble is I have no idea how to go about discussing the issue with anyone with authority, or responsibility, to make an official complaint.

The #enshittification of #YouTube must be all but complete. It used to be that adverts - if they were played at all - would at least wait for a very clear and obvious break in the audio to suggest a dialogue or scene change. Now it just breaks in - mid-sentence, mid-tune, whatever - with no consideration for matching the tone, the beat, or anything to do with the current video. Bloody awful, and intrusive, and on the verge of making it not worth even trying any more.
