Went to #JohnLewis in #Kingston yesterday. They have closed off all access to the riverside, which apart from anything else means you can't get to/from the cafe from the riverside it overlooks. (It used to be possible to enter/exit from either side of the through road.) Apparently, it's to mitigate theft from the tech zone. Well perhaps they ought not to have placed the tech zone on the ground floor near public access.

@realcainmosni Could there be a public right of way argument here?

John Lewis may own the whole site and only allow the right of way out of "goodwill" (similarly in Reading, you can get across two main streets by walking through John Lewis (formerly Heelas).
However, the tech/high value items are kept in a basement level and have been since the 1980s, so it would be difficult to quickly get out of there..

@vfrmedia @junesim63 Well, quite. One wonders what possessed John Lewis to site the consumer electronics department where they did. Presumably just because it predates high value portables like mobile 'phones and tablets, and used to only stock bulky items like TVs and such.

Reading has two basement levels.
Only the /first/ one you enter has the bulky items like TV sets, hifi, full size computers, the portable stuff is all in a corner further away.
Its not as if theft of high value small electronics is a new thing, it was equally a problem 40 years ago when stuff cost a great deal more (although its possible John Lewis also hired more human security staff to deal with it)
