ESA‘s Gaia mission is not the most splashy space mission, but it was exceptionally successful. Now it is running out of fuel and need to stop, but congrats to all who made it such a big success ! It is totally not my science, but I am absolutely impressed.

Results from our multi-wavelength campaign with the EHT-Collaboration on the famous supermassive black hole in M87. Last year we published a paper with a unified derivation of Hawking radiation and the Schwinger effect. Surprisingly we didn’t need the black hole event horizon to pair produce in a gravitational field. Question! I am writing a new popular science book with the working title: „Between Genesis and Apocalypse - the big story of our little world”, from the Big Bang until today. It is an amazing journey to see how the cosmos made our world and ourselves.
Is there anything specific that you would like to see in there? Any surprise insights (or anecdotes), that I could have missed?
Book appears next fall in Germany first, but there is still a chance to tweak things a little.

Successful defense of our latest #astrophysics PhD @Radboud_uni, Jesse Vos, supervised by Monika Moscibrodzka. He was looking at plasmoids orbiting our Galactic Center black hole and made pioneering particle-in-cell-simulations of the entire near black hole region. This shows how and where the particles are heated that produce the radio light we measure. Jet-sheath and equatorial plasmoids are indeed key regions. as we had assumed before.
