If you're looking for a quick way to help some folks out, go drop some hand and toe warmers off at your local free stuff place (free library, community fridge, etc).
Folks living outside are hurting this week. Buy them a hot coffee if they want it. Give them a few bucks to ride the subway and warm up (or swipe them in with your card if you don't have cash).
And it should go without saying but really REALLY don't call the cops on folks sleeping inside in weird places. They wouldn't be there if it wasn't their only option.

Pay attention to the language being used by the politicians in this article.
"Made it perfectly clear—they're going after the criminal element first," said Sposato. "They're not after dreamers. They're after the criminal element first."
If that casual "first" thrown in there doesn't give you chills and make you reach for your nearest phone to call your lawmakers, you are not worried enough. This is EXACTLY the tactic used in Nazi Germany that led to the eventual extermination of large numbers of Jews, Poles, gay people, and so many more. This is the kind of language that led to a World War.
They start by going after people that society doesn't care about. The criminals, the political dissidents... But that's just who they're after "first."
Regardless of how you may feel about immigrants who commit crimes, if you don't want to be "next" then you have to defend the folks who are up for the chopping block "first." Make that your hill to die on. Because once you let ICE into your city for immigrants who commit crimes, they're NOT going to stop there and it's only a matter of time before they are going after people who aren't even remotely connected to immigration matters. First, the definition of a crime will change, then they'll drop that stipulation altogether. Then they'll go after new citizens. Then they'll go after you.
Do not be distracted by the changes that seem like small, tolerable steps. Keep your eye on the end game. The end game is a fascist dictatorship with deportation or prison for all dissenters.

After any direct action such as a counter-protest, there will be some people arguing something along the lines of "well now that you've been violent towards them you've just proved their point/invigorated them/made them believe even harder/made the problem worse."
While these comments are usually well-intentioned, they are unhelpful and miss the point of direct action, which is a tactic used when other methods like talking peacefully or explaining things have already failed.
If someone is marching or otherwise actively trying through political or extra political means to remove someone's right to live peacefully as themselves, they are already beyond the stage of reasoned argument. They have made the transition into intolerant ideology.
The first step to countering these ideologies is to understand that ignoring extreme intolerant behavior does not make it go away. In fact, it makes it worse. Furthermore, there's a lot of historical evidence (the Nazi party's rise to power being the most famous) that trying to argue with intolerant ideologies using reason and peaceful means is not effective.

Groups such as anti-LGBTQ hate groups (including TERFs), neo-Nazis, and Christian extremists have violated the social contract. If we try to counter them by reasoning with them but are otherwise tolerant of them, they will use that tolerance against us to take over society and enforce their intolerance on the broader society as a whole.
TL; DR: You have to reject intolerant ideologies or they will spread. If reason does not work, other means may be necessary. This is the nature of the social contract we all keep with each other in order to live together peacefully.
