Pay attention to the language being used by the politicians in this article.

If that casual "first" thrown in there doesn't give you chills and make you reach for your nearest phone to call your lawmakers, you are not worried enough. This is EXACTLY the tactic used in Nazi Germany that led to the eventual extermination of large numbers of Jews, Poles, gay people, and so many more. This is the kind of language that led to a World War.
They start by going after people that society doesn't care about. The criminals, the political dissidents... But that's just who they're after "first."
Regardless of how you may feel about immigrants who commit crimes, if you don't want to be "next" then you have to defend the folks who are up for the chopping block "first." Make that your hill to die on. Because once you let ICE into your city for immigrants who commit crimes, they're NOT going to stop there and it's only a matter of time before they are going after people who aren't even remotely connected to immigration matters. First, the definition of a crime will change, then they'll drop that stipulation altogether. Then they'll go after new citizens. Then they'll go after you.
Do not be distracted by the changes that seem like small, tolerable steps. Keep your eye on the end game. The end game is a fascist dictatorship with deportation or prison for all dissenters.
