Having your house renovated without moving all your stuff out is like going to Burning Man in your living room. You'll find dust in cracks you didn't know you had!

Ok anyone got a good lawyer that's familiar with issues dealing with general contractors in California?
Time to finally go nuclear and I need recommendations.
I've never sued anyone in my life, but hey, I'm American now, so, when in Rome sue their pants off as they say right?

I find myself looking for a new job.
I helped put Photoshop on the web, I built UI to fly the SpaceX Dragon capsule, and started the Spectrum Web Components project at Adobe which now powers a good chunk of Adobe web apps.
I focus on high performance, deep session web experiences, but am a strong Web Components and 'use the platform' advocate.
I've always said you can build any experience on the web platform and have spent my career proving that true.
What do you want help bringing to life?

Today the UK government told me they can't issue a renewed passport because my name doesn't match my US passport!
My US passport matches my UK birth certificate, while my UK one is missing my middle name.
Apparently you can't use your birth certificate as a name change document, so now I need two other forms of id to prove the name I was born with. But most of my US IDs and accounts were setup when I only had my UK identification, without my full name!
Good old English bureaucracy! 2025 sucks

You know 2025 is off to a great start when you find out your general contractor hasn't been paying his sub contractors and your house is still unlivable, and he has taken most of the money for your job and apparently has 150k+ in outstanding debts with a number of other subcontractors and they all say they won't work with him again....
Can I just give up already?

Yesterday I grilled 5 spatchcocked Cornish game hens for Christmas dinner.
Today I'm roasting 3 more hens, stuffed this time, and grilling 2 racks of lamb.
It's amazing what an introvert will do to avoid having to talk to people!

Way too many folks sending Christmas greetings from way too many timezones.
You're all triggering my Engineers DateTime Handling PTSD.
Happy Christmas folks.

So, when your contractors start to replace your roof, and they don't button it down, fix up the flashing, unscrew your neighbors downspouts so they fall down and leave you with literal visible daylight through the walls in your bedroom, and they don't shore any of this up before a large storm arrives, leaving you with gallons of water being poured into the inside of your walls... It's lawyer time right?

So @protonprivacy you did a good job on the web app, it's arguably better than the mobile app in that it's faster to load and opens emails quicker!
But you failed on one key #accessibility issue. Your dark mode settings don't apply to the email body and this creates a really glaring contrast issue. My eyes, they burn. The native app does this right, but it's so very very slow to load email it's a non starter.
This might actually be a deal breaker for me.

It's that time of year where we collectively boost LEGOs stock price by blindly buying more LEGO kits for our various nieces and nephews!
With their brick buy-back program it's really starting to feel like we're just shuffling extinct dinosaurs in brick form around and around.

Ok to be fair we did finally find a way to downgrade back to the regular 100gb storage plan. It was hiding in some settings panel somewhere not on the regular subscription options pages. And they did still eat 6 months of subscription fees for trying out the trial.
Still, had enough and finally time to de-google.

[#]google are tricking folks into leaving grandfathered Google One plans by offering free 7 day trials of their new AI tools and then refusing to allow users to revert to their previous plans even if they had months of active time left on their subscriptions, with no refunds.
Apparently this is fine because contract terms allow it. This is some #shadyshit and is the final straw for myself and my family.
Who's got good recommendations for email hosts?

Is anyone successfully working in a large (~100package) typescript monorepo in VSCode and managing to get correct TS language server type inference across the repo without regularly restarting TS Server all the time to the point you have it on a keybind?
We're finding it not detecting changes often, especially when switching branches. Despite using project references.

I rarely dev when I travel, but have a rare couple of weeks where I have to now.
How on earth do people do web dev in a single 15" laptop screen!?
I spend all day switching windows. It's a nightmare.
You can't even get a decent side by side of app and devtools up at the same time.
I have never missed my LG Dual Up and 32" main monitor so much.

The web balances on a knife edge. It's kept upright by impassioned people arguing for security and privacy and pushing within these organizations to make it all a reality. But it also runs on real engineering hours, sunk into projects that those same folks have managed to carve out space for within what should be entirely self interested corporate bodies.
Yes there is some lopsidedness right now, but upsetting that balance within the current economic and political environment is a Very Bad Idea

We got incredibly lucky with how we netted out on the web so far. Somehow we managed to end up with 3 major browsers all competing on the same platform, we got multiple mega corporations to fund this shared innovation on standards development and it's actively pushing back on the walled gardens of those very same mega corporations! It's baffling it works at all.
