[#]google are tricking folks into leaving grandfathered Google One plans by offering free 7 day trials of their new AI tools and then refusing to allow users to revert to their previous plans even if they had months of active time left on their subscriptions, with no refunds.
Apparently this is fine because contract terms allow it. This is some #shadyshit and is the final straw for myself and my family.
Who's got good recommendations for email hosts?

The harder one to replace will be the Google photos integration on my android devices. Any recommendations for that?

Ok to be fair we did finally find a way to downgrade back to the regular 100gb storage plan. It was hiding in some settings panel somewhere not on the regular subscription options pages. And they did still eat 6 months of subscription fees for trying out the trial.
Still, had enough and finally time to de-google.

@bendelarre I use Fastmail for my email and have been very satisfied.
For photos, this is exceptionally niche, but I use syncthing on my phone to back everything up to a NAS, then a unidirectional backup on that folder to create a permanent mirror (so deletes aren't also synced). Then do whatever you'd like with it (share, expose to internet, etc.). If you only want 1:1 phone sync, you don't need the mirror, and syncthing will keep your storage in sync with your phone (including deletes).

@bendelarre if you're up for the NAS anyway, I've heard (but never confirmed) that Immich is a great replacement.

@rockerest immich might well be worth a look I have a local NAS anyway so with a cloud backup that might be a nice option.

@bendelarre Jottacloud could be an option. I've been happy with it for many years.

@bendelarre I’ve been a long time ProtonMail user and am pretty happy with the service. My wife and I both use it on their Duo plan. ProtonDrive on mobile will also sync your photos automatically but it’s no Google Photos. (Lightroom? 😉)

@svoisen hah I didn't get a lifetime Adobe license when I left, I'm not sure I can justify a Lightroom license for my awful random photos of my foot, the odd stain on the ceiling, and all the many many photos of things under the cabinet in the kitchen I can't see.

@bendelarre that is predatory...

@konnorrogers it is 100% that. I've generally been happy with most Google stuff over the years and considered data a fair trade for services that didn't intrude on my life too much. But since actually paying for things with them every experience has actually been a net negative.
