If y'all are wondering how I'm doing re: the possibility of TikTok going dark (for me and 150 million other folks), the answer is that I'm pretty unhappy about it! Though in the meantime I'm getting comments like this on my videos.

Anyone have suggestions for journals that would publish a book review for tech & society sort of books? Apparently New Media & Society is no longer doing book reviews. (Asking for a student.)

The last time I posted here I got yelled at for daring to even mention the existence of Bluesky, so please feel free to just scroll on past if you don't want to read my updated thoughts on Twitter migration - which, spoiler, includes some research findings about barriers to widespread adoption of Mastodon. https://theconversation.com/bluesky-isnt-the-new-twitter-but-its-resemblance-to-the-old-one-is-drawing-millions-of-new-users-244019

I also briefly mention there our replication of the twitter research ethics survey on Mastodon (with @bkeegan and co.). We’ve analyzed the data and are writing a paper, but I’ll try to prioritize getting a blog post about those findings out soon!

There was a kerfuffle on Bluesky yesterday because someone released a public dataset of Bluesky posts (with the intention that they could be used for e.g. AI training). I spent literally two hours this morning on a thread about public social media and research ethics, so figured I'd share here too. :) https://skywriter.blue/pages/cfiesler.bsky.social/post/3lbwurkbfcs2w

Anyone have experience using Prolific for survey research? Thumbs up, thumbs down?

So this weekend I made my debut as a standup comic. My set was about AI and also goats! According to folks in the sold out audience I was quite good, though some of them were my friends, so. :)

I’m doing another PhD applicant Q&A livestream this coming Sunday! I figure we’re getting into crunch time. :) https://www.youtube.com/live/a2J520bPWf8?si=rKOQFw7zgsvj49yl

I am not at #AOIR2024 in the UK but I did wake up at 2am to give a talk over Zoom about ethical issues in research uses of AI for a workshop. :)

Hey social computing/HCI folks, #CSCW2025 is in desperate need of ACs. Step up if there's any way you can! https://forms.gle/WaHnUwacNVSugKjr8

I am so jealous of how close MIT/Harvard are to the airport haha. (But also grateful to live as close to a major airport as I do!)

Today I spoke at the “path to professorship” workshop for grad students and postdocs at MIT, about research communication. I love this conversation! Giving advice to grad students is still one of my favorite things. :)

A random reminder to CHI etc. folks: check your conflicts in PCS occasionally. By default you are conflicted with everyone you've ever e.g. been on a panel with. Including in my case everyone who received the CSCW Lasting Impact Award the year I moderated the session haha.

Related complaint: When you decline a review in PCS, it just immediately goes away. (1) Better not misclick. (2) There's no easy way to suggest other reviewers. You have to go out of your way to send an email to the AC, and there's nothing that encourages you to do that or suggests you could. #chi2025

The numbers I'm hearing for numbers of #chi2025 batched review requests are absolutely wild. As an N of 1, I'm going to have to decline about 2/3 of requests I got. I know this is how batch requests are supposed to work, but I can't even suggest my students as alternate reviewers because they also got more requests than they can do already... Anyway, hang in there, ACs.

This drives me up the wall every time I see it. And multiple times now when I've been involved in putting together conference registration sites, I'm told that this is ACM-mandated language and it can't be changed. THIS IS NOT OPT-IN, IT IS OPT-OUT.

Ok CS/HCI people (and apologies to everyone else, just ignore this acronym soup), I have to get wider thoughts on a convo happening elsewhere on social media. Is there really a perception that CHI is better/more prestigious as a publication venue than CSCW or anything else that is part of PACM? Because that is totally wild to me, but maybe I’m just too stuck in my subfield(s) to know.

I'm looking for/into work on older adults and AI literacy, in case folks know who is working in that area! It feels like something that may have gotten more recent attention and so is happening but not published yet. :)

hey professor friends!
In your departments, do current graduate students ever help with graduate admissions? Does this raise concerns about applicant privacy?

FYI Mastodon still gives me "I need to say smart things for the other academics and tech people" anxiety, so I guess if you want to see the content that results when I'm not as performative, you can also follow @professorcasey
