There was a kerfuffle on Bluesky yesterday because someone released a public dataset of Bluesky posts (with the intention that they could be used for e.g. AI training). I spent literally two hours this morning on a thread about public social media and research ethics, so figured I'd share here too. :) https://skywriter.blue/pages/cfiesler.bsky.social/post/3lbwurkbfcs2w

I also briefly mention there our replication of the twitter research ethics survey on Mastodon (with @bkeegan and co.). We’ve analyzed the data and are writing a paper, but I’ll try to prioritize getting a blog post about those findings out soon!

@cfiesler @bkeegan I would love to read this! I often cite your Twitter survey and it would be great to also connect this to Mastodon! (and to see how it connects to our study of Mastodon instance rules: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11616-024-00855-6).
also thanks so much, Casey, for the blog post about the bluesky case and the excellent collection of links in it!

@kwelle Interesing paper, thanks much .... I hadn't seen that! The recommendations are solid, another one that's particularly important s to take existing opt-in/opt-out signals into account -- I talk about that some from a developer perspective in Eight tips about consent for fediverse developers
Have you followed the work @darius is doing on the Fediverse Schema Observatory? It's a good example of best practices!

@cfiesler thanks for putting that together.
(I have nothing useful to add, but I wanted there to be a reply that isn't from somebody being a giant douche.)

@cliffle They’re an excellent reminder of why so many people tell me they hate Mastodon though. 🤷♀️

@cfiesler "The Comsumer Manifesto" by Stuart Henshall published in "First Monday" in 2000 (https://firstmonday.org/ojs/index.php/fm/article/view/747/656) was a fascinating early study about who owned personal data on the Internet and what rights individuals should have. #personaldata #thecomsumermanifesto. Old but enlightening.
