Wondering if there's a way to integrate my pixelfed feed into my masto page (eg like how my blog autoposts here) - or perhaps it's better to keep it separate, as fedi folks can follow it anyway, should they wish.

I overheard a guy in the library telling his colleague about his new year resolution: to eat a bar of chocolate every day. He's logging everything in a spreadsheet in order to do a "chocolate bar wrapped" at the end of 2025. He has eaten 18 Creme Eggs already this year.

I am now on Pixelfed at: http://pixey.org/graham.dunning

Quiet over there for now but I'm planning to at least mirror my instagram feed there, with the plan to drop insta soonish if it works out.

Can anyone recommend a server for Pixelfed?

Is there any major reason not to go with Pixelfed.social?

Wondering if there's somewhere more art / maker / music tech / sound art focused than just a generic page.

I was under the impression you could log in with normal fedi credentials but don't seem to be able to get that to work. Perhaps post.lurk.org isn't geared up for integration.

Listen live via NTS.live or catch recent shows in the archive here. Lots of new releases for the first show of 2025, amongst some older pieces. The climbing wall playing disco more and more often. It's great music to climb to. Long may it continue!

Quite tempted to put together a David Lynch special for the radio show next week, but knowing NTS there are likely multiple other show hosts thinking exactly the same thing.

Improvising with Machines case study: Mechanical Techno

The recent article for Organised Sound myself and Adam Parkinson wrote changed significantly from its first draft, which was weighted heavily towards case studies of our individual electronic music practices. Below is my case study, which describes one section of a typical live performance with the Mechanical Techno extended turntable setup. In my Mechanical Techno project I use a standard DJ turntable as the basis for a spinning stack of modified vinyl records, each of which generates or triggers sound in a variety of ways.

Trying to register some tracks on a certain music royalties programme, their website is completely unfit for purpose. Here's my comment from their feedback form. Who knows if anyone reads this stuff or will try and change anything.

"Data entry on this website is a nightmare. It's needlessly unhelpful - repetitive processes become very frustrating. The website is also incredibly difficult to navigate - i can't find menus for the pages I need within the member/login area and keep getting kicked out back to the public help pages. Cycling in loops round pages, useless menus, re-entering the same data over and over again. It's honestly awful to use."

It's my first radio show of 2025 next week, so I'll be making the episode soon. If you have any new experimental music / sound art / noise / improv / computer music / uncatategorisable sounds available, send them my way for consideration.

These cost nearly £250 new, I'd never have bought them myself. Most expensive shoes I've ever worn, by quite a long way. Feels quite weird to be honest!

New running shoes bought from a friend very cheap. Just had a quick run round the block to test them out - completely different feel to my current ones, will take a while to get used to.

So the edge of your record is passing the needle at a whopping 1.884 km/h

Just calculated the distance the needle travels on a record (per side) to be about 500m.

A cursory look online suggests other people with far too much time on their hands / reasons to procrastinate suggests they concluded similar. So that's a relief.

Interesting as I tentatively start to write the exegesis for my PhD how much I want to include diagrams, illustrations etc. I've come to realise I understand things very much in visual terms. Fully planning to present a thesis peppered with diagrams.

Shout out to Hackney Council for clearing the leaves out of our bike hangar. It was about 40cm deep before, it's like a trawler net for dead leaves!

Ran out of steam with writing this week so I've spent this afternoon making rough mixes of some tracks I've (half) finished over the last couple of years. Planning a walk for a couple of hours to listen through.
