What is your experience of scholarly culture around generative AI for writing and ideas generation?

Sometimes in debates about the usefulness of "AI" technology, people note recent examples in the news of AI being used to do amazing things, like improving cancer detection.
There's a really important distinction between AI / machine learning tools, even tools including generative AI, and the big LLMs like ChatGPT.

I feel like I used to be able to see all five of my Mastodon web client columns (left panel, home, a "friends" list feed, notifications, and the column for whatever is active) at 80% browser zoom, but now I need to set the zoom to 67%.
Is anyone else seeing this? Did something change?

Rather than looking at a new technology and asking "how can this be used?" I think a better viewpoint is "is this entirely necessary?" I think that in evaluating the ethics of a new technology there should always be an ethical cost imposed to adoption vs. non-adoption. Those who seek to profit from new technology want us to instead ask what is the cost of non-adoption, but this is the wrong way to think about it.

In response to a thread by @flancian, I just wrote a long rant about the value technoskepticism as applied to generative AI:
https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/item/e3e54544-956e-4ca8-99a3-21fa999a0331
I think it might be more digestible in thread form, so I'm also transcribing it as a thread here.

For anyone who missed my previous messages about it, I'm trying out Hubzilla for real now, and have been really enjoying the switch. It will probably be my primary Fediverse home for the near future. You can follow me at @dynamic@hub.netzgemeinde.eu
Account migration to Hubzilla is not automated, so I need to do all this by hand, and having people reach out to me facilitates the connection process a lot.

@CedarTea
Hi,
Would you be willing to let my new Hubzilla account (@dynamic@hub.netzgemeinde.eu) follow you?
I sent the request a bit ago but forgot to follow up until now.

If capitalism works so well, why is it so hard to find a paying job doing labor that is actively beneficial to society, or at least not actively propagating harm?

Someone boosted a blog post (or something?) onto my feed, and something that's interesting to me is that the post contained boldface and italics, and I can see them here on Mastodon.
I'm really curious about this.

Quote: "“We used physical punishment in childhood as a marker of dysfunctional family environment,” Milburn said. “There was significantly more support for the capital punishment, opposition to abortion and the use of military force, particularly among males who had experienced high levels of physical punishment, especially if they had never had psychotherapy.” I was intrigued by that last finding."

I've been reading up on #Bluesky, and it isn't what I thought. As far as I can tell (please correct me if you know otherwise), it an open source federated social media platform.
It runs on a protocol called #ATProtocol, as opposed to #ActivityPub (#Mastodon and friends).
Other Fedi protocols include #Diaspora, DFRN (#Friendica), Zot (#Hubzilla), or Nomad (#Streams).
However, bridge services are needed for Bluesky/Mastodon federation, and there's mostly just one big Bluesky instance.

In a perfect world, what do you think the relationship should be between non-corporate Mastodon (or other Fediverse) instances and instances run by for-profit corporations?
(Boosts welcome; If your opinion is something other than what is listed, it'd be great if you could post it.)

The mosquitos in our dense Massachusetts neighborhood are very intense. It's not obvious where they are breeding, but a very plausible hypothesis is in the same clogged gutters that the neighborhood birds use as bird baths.
Getting up there to clean the gutters is not at all straightforward, though.
I feel like a topic that should be discussed but that I never hear about is user-serviceable housing.

If you are unfamiliar with #Euphoria / #Heim, it's pretty cool chat software:

What makes it really special is nested threading for chat.

Context: I have an old laptop with an unusable screen. It has 2GB of RAM. I don't really need another desktop computer, so I want to turn it into a home server.
Friendica's hardware specs say 2GB is the minimum for full functionality.
I want to do all the things listed in the poll, but maybe on different servers.

I have an old laptop with an unusable screen. It has 2GB of RAM. I don't really need another desktop computer, so I want to turn it into a home server.
Things I'd like a server for: an instance of #Friendica or #Streams, host my own website, an IMAP server, a Euphoria/#Heim instance (https://github.com/CylonicRaider/heim).
Friendica's hardware specs say 2GB is the minimum for full functionality.
I want to do all these things, but maybe on different servers.
What should I do?
