One of the forms of clickbait I hate the most is that "1%" crap. "Only 1% of DJs can do this", "Only 1% of drummers can play this", "Only 1% of viewers noticed this", etc.

And then it turns out to be something super basic and stupid.

Anyway. I read this post at 0.25x speed, and you'll never believe what I noticed.

Another fantastic @owncast newsletter from @roadriverrail. They do such a great job sharing what's going on in the greater ecosystem. If you haven't subscribed, it's one email every month or two and it's a really worthwhile read. I'm deeply thankful this resource exists for all of us. https://owncast.ghost.io/owncast-newsletter-january-2025/

We should be collectively paying @FediTips a full-time salary for all they do for the Fediverse. If you're not yet donating to them (only 32 people are), then think about doing so. https://liberapay.com/FediThing

So I have something pretty important to discuss.

You know on Star Trek, every race has a logo? There's a logo for the United Federation of Planets, but as far as I can tell, there isn't one for "human". And I'm sure it's because if we tried to commission a logo for "human" nobody would agree what it should look like, and it would be argued for decades before everyone just gave up on it.

Sure, but when is the Nintendo Switch 3? The 2 is looking a little long in the tooth. Look at that choppiness. FPS and upscaling and quantum universe jumping and blah blah.

I saw Anyma at Sphere in Vegas last night, and holy crap. I 110% recommend it. Words, photos and videos can't reproduce the experience.

A reminder that there are good guys out there. @dnalounge, a nightclub in San Francisco, shows this to its attendees every 15 seconds or so.

I wanted to share some thoughts on @radiofreefedi.

I'm disappointed it's shutting down in 2025. But I'm not disappointed in it, I'm just disappointed.

Let me go off on a slight tangent. In person, in the real world, when you meet people, it's so natural to collaborate. People start bands together, people start companies together, people start community basketball teams together... the world is full of people banding together to make the lives of themselves and others richer than they can alone. It's human nature to want to be a part of something. It's magical, and beautiful.

But somehow that doesn't translate online, almost ever. RadioFreeFedi is shutting down because it's one person who's been asking for help for years and not received any and is now burned out. This isn't unlike so many other projects with a lone maintainer who is one bad day from shutting things down forever.

Why is it that collaboration, and that feeling of wanting to be a part of something doesn't happen online? Why is everyone alone, hanging by a thread, desperate for others to join them when offline it happens so much more naturally?

Everybody is busy. Everyone has work. Everyone has a family. Everyone doesn't have the skills. Everyone would take part "if they could" online. Yet you go to a conference in person and you'll meet a handful of people excited about what you're doing and asking how they can be a part of it.

Why doesn't this translate? Is this just how it has to be forever? That projects like RadioFreeFedi will exist until they burn out and everyone says "that's too bad, nothing could have been done"?

And I might sound like a hypocrite because I don't join every single project that I care about, but I at least try to be involved with some things. And I'm not being all holier-than-thou here, I'm just generalizing all of us. We're all a bunch of selfish assholes who don't care about being a part of things. And I don't understand why.

Just learned that all the podcasts on The Changelog podcast network are going away. That's literally all I listen to. It sounds like all that will be left is an interview show and a news recap.
