I wanted to share some thoughts on @radiofreefedi.

I'm disappointed it's shutting down in 2025. But I'm not disappointed in it, I'm just disappointed.

Let me go off on a slight tangent. In person, in the real world, when you meet people, it's so natural to collaborate. People start bands together, people start companies together, people start community basketball teams together... the world is full of people banding together to make the lives of themselves and others richer than they can alone. It's human nature to want to be a part of something. It's magical, and beautiful.

But somehow that doesn't translate online, almost ever. RadioFreeFedi is shutting down because it's one person who's been asking for help for years and not received any and is now burned out. This isn't unlike so many other projects with a lone maintainer who is one bad day from shutting things down forever.

Why is it that collaboration, and that feeling of wanting to be a part of something doesn't happen online? Why is everyone alone, hanging by a thread, desperate for others to join them when offline it happens so much more naturally?

Everybody is busy. Everyone has work. Everyone has a family. Everyone doesn't have the skills. Everyone would take part "if they could" online. Yet you go to a conference in person and you'll meet a handful of people excited about what you're doing and asking how they can be a part of it.

Why doesn't this translate? Is this just how it has to be forever? That projects like RadioFreeFedi will exist until they burn out and everyone says "that's too bad, nothing could have been done"?

And I might sound like a hypocrite because I don't join every single project that I care about, but I at least try to be involved with some things. And I'm not being all holier-than-thou here, I'm just generalizing all of us. We're all a bunch of selfish assholes who don't care about being a part of things. And I don't understand why.
