I had one of my chert blanks I heat-treated a few years ago, so I made this Late Archaic-Early Woodland period Flint Creek (ca. 1000-100 BCE) projectile point out of it. #archaeology #flintknapping

Decided to reduce a chert pebble I picked up.

I gave up. It was going good but just couldn't knock off the thick knob of material. My poor fingers decided enough was enough. In the early 80s someone in our group said, "Start with a round pebble, end with a round blank". It wasn't round, but the edge was 4x thicker. #flintknapping #archaeology

How do we determine where to excavate? Often, we dig a grid of shovel tests, plot the distribution of the artifacts, then place units in high, medium & low-density areas. We then expand the excavations as time, money, & questions allow.

Here are Surfer maps of various artifact types. #archaeology

One of my lost battles in archaeology was this cylindrical clay doll fragment from a Marksville (ca. 1-400 CE) site overlooking the Pearl River Basin in Louisiana. I argued that only one other had been found in LA. The COE contract called for determining "Significant or Not" based on one unit, even though we were looking at 11 different areas for levees. My employer, the CRM firm, weighed the political ramifications of finding nothing else of importance & decided against the site. #archaeology

I'm not pulling out the 30lb microscope to look for use-wear scratches on the quartzitic sandstone (quartzite) grains, but I will post some images from the small digital microscope. 😏

Site 16BE75 groundstone artifact: L) Different lighting of the smooth side with a few larger scratches; R) Different lighting of 3 of the deeper pits. #archaeology #lithics

The damage is not in the correct locations for use as a lithic reduction hammerstone or maul. It also is not where you would expect damage from making grog. The artifact has a flat side (1.) that is smoother than the other surfaces, possibly indicating use as a pestle also. 2/ #archaeology #lithics

I also made a small San Patrice variety St. Johns (Late Paleo ca. 8500-7500 BCE) point out of green glass this afternoon.

Ann said I chose the green stoplight glass, not the red. 😆 #archaeology #flintknapping

It was warm on the carport this afternoon, so I decided to do some flintknapping.

I found a small quartz crystal-filled cavity in the chalcedony biface I was reducing. 1/ #archaeology #rocks #flintknapping

Henley's Twentieth Century Formulas, Processes & Trade Secrets is great resource for figuring out what is being talked about in late 19th C & early 20th C medical, industrial, pharmacology, metallurgy, etc. reports, journals & news articles. This is the 1957 edition. I recommend the 1907 edition that is available from archive_dot_org..

FYI - In the past 2 weeks I've received 4 fairly realistic looking fake Social Security emails saying I need to log into my account. Each has a Case/ID number, but it differs on all of the emails.

These are scams. Never click on an email a link unless you're absolutely positive you know the sender & are expecting an email from them.

If you are unsure if an email is from the Social Security Administration, go to the Social Security website & log into check your account from there. 1/
