Am I surprised? No... The USgov has been getting Ds and Fs on security report cards for years. But this is bare minimum level protection that is easy to automate these days.

A friend of mine works in IT in the US District court system. We were talking this weekend about security things and it came up that none of their end user machines (desktops or laptops) are full disk encrypted.
I was fucking aghast. It is 2025 and there is not a federal mandate for FDE across all systems. FFS, we've been doing this in corporate systems for over a decade or more.
Bitlocker released in 2007. Filevault 2 in 2011. This isn't new stuff. SMDH.

It seems Bambu Labs is making a change that creates a hard dependency on their cloud service to use their printers, even if you're running in LAN mode. This is disappointing, as I'd really like to get an X1C for their print quality, flexibility, and ease of use. I don't want to use their cloud, tho.
I've created a basic framework for a local-only Authorization Control System that would provide equal security without using the cloud.

There's apparently a leak in the water main outside my place. City water folks were just jackhammering through the concrete pavement. Now it sounds like they've got a jet engine going out there. Guessing that's their water vacuum to keep the hole empty.
It was good to see that they all had earplugs. I'm 50+ feet away and it's loud for me. I wouldn't want to be doing that work without hearing protection.

I've had a good old fashioned cold all week. I've done a metric boat load of nose blowing. Think I've gone through at least 3 boxes of tissues.
Why did it take me until middle age to learn that putting vaseline (or aquaphor, if you're fancy) around your nostrils and just under your nose on the looks it up philtrum really helps keep you from tearing the shit out of your nose when you're blowing it every 5 minutes?

It took me almost 14 years of living here and randomly getting linked a wikipedia article about it to find out why University Way NE is known as "The Ave".

Attention Seattle area shop nerds. UW has an auction posted for a lot containing a Grizzly metal lathe, a Grizzly band saw, and a rolling shop table. Untested, so YMMV, but might be good for someone getting a workshop going.

Thanks to reading a Guardian article about the top 20 Duran Duran songs, I find myself watching some videos this morning and I notice this odd machine at 2:19 in the video for "is there something I should know". It's hard to tell because it's out of focus, but it looks like it's either got two screens and one is dark or maybe there were floppies on the left. It's as if a TRS-80 Model 3 and a VT100 had a love child.
Anyone know what this is?

FFS. Walked into Bartell drugs in my neighborhood to get some toothpaste, deodorant, and Qtips. About 50% of their shelves are empty and have been for months.
They had just three kinds of toothpaste in stock. They didn't have my deodorant and then just I gave up and left.
I know parent Rite Aid has been going through bankruptcy, but this is depressing. Bartell used to be such a lovely WA drugstore chain and now it's sad husk of its former self.
