08:08 matey; signing up to a board position for a week or less is hardly better than a scam
08:09 schestowitz[TR]; some people who entered gnu, fsf, or both doi not agree with rmsa
08:09 schestowitz[TR]; some go as far as trying to oust him, e.g. mlee
08:09 schestowitz[TR]; *mattl
08:09 matey; gnu is a brand but its more than that too
08:09 matey; a lot of brands stand for a fiction
08:09 matey; gnu stood for a reality
08:09 matey; but now it is definitely a fiction
08:09 matey; one of the major things i butted heads with oliva on is the idea that gnu and the fsf are separate
08:10 matey; theyre coinjoined twins
08:10 matey; sometimes you can separate them without killing one
08:10 matey; with gnu and fsf you cant
08:10 matey; that whole theme was bs
08:10 matey; maybe there was a noble reason for it, but it was still bs

08:17 matey; then the discrepency between "what was fought for" and what was won isnt as incredible

08:37 matey; In August 2014, Simmons made comments in an interview with Songfacts.com that seemed to openly encourage people with depression to kill themselves. The comments drew criticism from Nikki Sixx of Mtley Cre who had suffered from depression in the past.
08:37 matey; i would encourage him to get clinically depressed.
08:37 matey; Simmons later clarified his comments and apologized for the incident.
08:38 matey; bahaha On November 16, 2017, Simmons made an appearance on Fox & Friends to promote a new book, but shortly afterward, he burst into a staff meeting uninvited, unbuttoning his shirt and telling jokes. The next day, on November 17, Fox News announced that Simmons was banned for life from their program.

12:15 psydroid2; I've read that many binaries targetting older releases of Windows don't work on Windows 10 anymore, but do work on WINE

16:36 matey; the first one is that i believe some projects are deliberately, intentionally monopolistic
16:37 TR News; Heat wave approaching, promising to almost break some temperature records tomorrow. And we don't have air conditioning...
16:37 matey; these projects do what i call "simulated lockin"-- rms / parrots would agree that lockin is impossible with free licensed software. i call bunk on that.
16:37 matey; a degree of lockin is absolutely possible
16:38 matey; projects that will never be forked include rust, linux (kernel) and systemd
16:39 matey; one of these is disputed. but i maintain these will never be forked
16:39 matey; a grey area is trinity. its a fork. whether its really possible to maintain, we will see
16:40 matey; i think kde 3 is probably semi-forkable, but they could prove it to be forkable
16:40 matey; if kde 3 was forkable as trinity, but trinity cant be forked even if they want it to be-- that would be a good test of being semi-forkable
16:41 matey; its a grey area, and harder to prove one way or the other
16:41 matey; people say forks of systemd exist-- and thats true depending on what you think a fork is
16:42 matey; but these forks are less viable than trinity, and theyre essentially bandages, not cures
16:42 matey; rust is unforkable because a fork couldnt accomplish any of the things you would need a fork for in the first place
16:43 matey; rust is inherently unstable by design, and as such is a web/clownapi posing as a programming language

16:52 matey; maybe trinity is an example of this. as i said it remains to be seen, but i have my suspicions

16:52 matey; software thats truly unforkable is de facto non-free
16:53 matey; rms doesnt believe this exists, even when its right in front of him
16:53 matey; this is something hes simply wrong about
16:53 matey; freedom 4 (the right to remove the software) stands against this. freedom 4 was a de facto freedom. you could even call it freedom -1
16:54 matey; without the freedom to remove the software, the other freedoms are threatened
16:55 matey; you cant use the software for any purpose
16:55 matey; you cant study how the software works-- at least linus cant study how linux works
16:55 matey; you cant fork the software, so freedom 3 is out
16:56 matey; and as for verbatim copies, bloat certainly places limits on that and lockin makes it a more demanding task because
16:56 matey; for example, with rust how many verbatim copies do you need to have?
16:56 matey; with the right to make copies this is kind of a stretch

17:02 matey; and that gnu coded itself right out of freedom 4
17:03 matey; all theyre going to do is fork other things that do the same job
17:03 matey; this is sort of tragic because gnu has incredible relevance to the movement
17:03 matey; its loss is the movements loss
17:04 matey; but the movement has already lost gnu, it doesnt even know why
17:04 matey; rejecting freedom 4-- not officially, but in practice
17:04 matey; is the error in theory that will be the death of gnu
17:05 matey; the fsd is a theory, like evolution (in that it tries to explain something that definitely happens)

17:06 matey; without freedom 4, the fsd is like lamarkianism
17:07 matey; it only leads to strategies that will fail (and have failed)
17:07 matey; when you get science wrong, the application will (ultimately) be wrong
17:08 matey; the 4 freedoms are the point, of course-- we want them, we need them. without them its non-free
17:08 matey; its just that they rest on, depend on, a de facto freedom that stallman just doesnt get

18:30 matey; the slurpee was invented because a soda fountain was broken
18:31 matey; his soda fountain broke, leaving Knedlik without cold drinks in the Kansas heat. So he sent away for bottles of soda and plunged them into the frosty depths of his freezer to chill for his thirsty customers. When he popped the lids, the sodas instantly turned slushy

19:22 DaemonFC; Yeah, I accidentally blew up a can of diet pepsi before we moved out of Rogers Park where that insane landlord was fucking with me every day and breaking the law and raising our rent constantly by ridiculous amounts.
19:23 DaemonFC; She took a picture of it while she was blowing up my phone at 2-3 AM (and she had entered our apartment while we were still paid up, to do that!) and threatened that she would "Add cleaning fees to our bill.".
19:24 DaemonFC; I told her we weren't quite finished and the place would be clean, and that I planned to complain to the city about her illegal entry into the unit and several other things and go to the police because telephone harassment is illegal, if she continued to bother us.
19:24 DaemonFC; I said, "I know your husband is a lawyer. If you want him representing you in a criminal trial for harassment then you can keep going.".
19:25 DaemonFC; But exploded soft drinks are not difficult if the refrigerator is empty anyway.

19:28 DaemonFC; Well, that's one thing, and maybe they will and maybe they won't, but it hardly matters.
19:29 DaemonFC; The average Android app from the Play store has about 20 tracking libraries and they all have GPS access.
19:29 DaemonFC; So Ken Paxton goes and pays one of them and bypasses the courts and hands that data to the local prosecutor instead.

19:29 DaemonFC; He's really really big on the whole sjw thing, you know.
19:30 DaemonFC; Maybe Google won't do it directly, but their platform is made to leak data, so it will.
19:30 DaemonFC; If you go out of state for an abortion, you need to leave your phone at home.
19:31 DaemonFC; And you need to not use Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, etc to look for info about clinics or how to get the abortion pill or something, because then they'll have that.
19:32 DaemonFC; I mean, like, if you use Tor Browser and set it to "Safest" and use DuckDuckGo Lite (the one where there's no JavaScript), you might be okay.
19:32 DaemonFC; Running JavaScript and other active content just creates too many situations where an unmasking attack against you goes ahead and works.
19:33 DaemonFC; And people aren't technical experts. They won't know all this stuff.
19:33 DaemonFC; They'll open Chrome and type in "How do I get to the abortion clinic in Illinois?" and then BAM, 10 years in prison when they get back to Texas.
19:33 DaemonFC; You know, take their "phone" with them.
19:34 DaemonFC; Location data leaking out, gets bought in bulk by prosecutors who don't need a warrant now.
19:34 DaemonFC; If you're looking up anything that even may be a crime....that's not how you do it.

21:01 XRevan86; https://novayagazeta.eu/articles/2022/07/17/russian-tv-protester-marina-ovsyannikova-detained-near-moscow-news "Russian TV protester Marina Ovsyannikova detained near Moscow"
21:01 TR Bot; .
21:01 DaemonFC; DOS had no real concept of multitasking. There were TSRs, but those were really just managing the system in the background and were usually small and carefully written to where they didn't crash while you had another program up and running.
21:01 XRevan86; Warm welcome back to Moscow.
21:01 DaemonFC; And I liked DOS because of that.
21:01 DaemonFC; You opened Windows, you had no idea what would happen.
21:02 DaemonFC; The Commodore Amiga was probably the first home computer that got multitasking right and wasn't a disaster.
21:03 DaemonFC; But I had one of the old Commodores that had a BASIC that they co-developed with Microsoft, but that wasn't the OS. The OS was a really minimalistic program that was essentially what we'd call a set of BIOS interfaces, called KERNAL (yes, that's how it was spelled).
21:04 DaemonFC; You never interacted with it as a user, directly. It interacted with the program you had open, and there was no multitasking really.
21:05 DaemonFC; So at like 4 or 5 years old I had the Commodore, and I ran my software for it off of tape drives and really large floppy disks.
21:05 DaemonFC; And even the Commodore at that point was more capable than a typical DOS computer, for another 10 years or so, in some ways, if the programmer was careful to do things efficiently.
21:06 DaemonFC; I wouldn't say that DOS clearly pulled out ahead of the 80s Commodores in video gaming until you started to see things like X-Wing and DOOM.
21:07 DaemonFC; But by that point, you expected it to, right? You had a computer with a 386 or 486 and 4, 8, or 16 MB of RAM.
21:08 DaemonFC; Not a CPU that was barely over 1 Mhz and 64 KB of RAM running things off floppies and tapes.
21:08 DaemonFC; The Amiga would have done a lot better except that it was really REALLY expensive.
21:09 DaemonFC; It had a feature set of a mid 90s (1995-1997) PC more than 10 years early. And the price you'd expect that to be in the mid 80s.
21:09 DaemonFC; People just weren't willing to pay that at that time, especially considering that the home computer market was still a novelty and most didn't even have any sort of network to connect it to.
21:11 DaemonFC; schestowitz[TR], I think the modern Web is going to get bad to the point that people vomit and go back to text and selectively downloading things and so on as a protest.
21:11 DaemonFC; But the Web will obviously be there and "imposed" by certain things, like online shopping or some assholes that demand you bank with it.
21:12 DaemonFC; Governments will demand you use it to interact with them.
21:12 DaemonFC; It's just all the worst people who absolutely insist on these bloated Web sites. If Lynx can't handle it, it's because the people running the site are complete shitheads.

23:10 MinceR; i gave netbsd a try, it's hardware support isn't exactly impressive
23:10 MinceR; s/t's/ts/

23:11 matey; the mistake thats become the norm is thinking of software as a product
23:11 matey; the correct mentality (the one that actually serves us well, i mean)
23:11 matey; is the one that existed before microsoft
23:11 matey; software is a project
23:11 matey; you learn it, or someone helps you with it
23:12 MinceR; it's both
23:12 matey; software isnt a product-- and when it is, it sucks
23:12 matey; often it sucks anyway
23:12 MinceR; you can't really afford to be an expert in the entire stack anymore
23:12 matey; but when its a product, youre fucked
23:12 matey; im no expert
23:13 matey; we need projects that attract experts, or at least competent people
23:13 matey; are alpine devs experts? i dont know, how would i
23:13 matey; are they competent? i believe so
23:14 matey; i see plenty of competence expressed
23:14 MinceR; devs have to be experts, users don't
23:14 matey; users should have basic computer literacy
23:14 matey; they dont, thats something weve cheated them out of
23:14 MinceR; basic computer literacy is sufficient for using a product
23:14 matey; literacy isnt expertise
23:14 MinceR; not really sufficient for taking part in a project
23:14 matey; weve cheated them out of the basics
23:14 matey; the oil changes and gauge checking
23:14 matey; weve sacrificed the user to jiffy noob
23:15 mjg59_; I think Alpine is sufficiently tightly scoped that it's possible to be an expert in the entire stack
23:15 matey; everyone suffers for this-- including the devs
23:15 MinceR; i doubt it
23:15 matey; now most devs have to do a bunch of idiotic bullshit to placate people who dont even know what htey want
23:15 MinceR; part of that stack is a highly bloated kernel
23:16 matey; funnily enough, the biggest reason id never use alpine is the kernel
23:16 MinceR; i could spend days just going through menuconfig these days
23:16 matey; but they dont write the kernel so its sort of not their fault
23:16 matey; but you can blame them for using it-- i sort of do
23:16 matey; im trying to give credit where credits due
23:16 MinceR; and that's with user documentation built in
23:16 matey; so i dont even know what menuconfig is
23:16 MinceR; lol
23:17 matey; hey i managed to use gnu/linux for like a decade and a half without it
23:17 MinceR; it's a tool to configure the Linux you build
23:17 matey; if its related to
23:17 MinceR; what to build into the kernel, what to build as modules, what not to build, other stuff
23:17 matey; i was going to say, if its related to building the kernel, ive ever done that
23:17 matey; that was my guess based on the context of what you were saying
23:17 matey; the most complex thing ive ever built is cpython
23:17 matey; and only for openbsd
23:18 matey; menuconfig is part of a kernel i think is hopeless-- and you probably think so too
23:18 matey; linux is non-free
23:18 matey; linux-libre is at best, barely free
23:18 matey; but you know i consider unforkable to non-free and both are unforkable
23:19 mjg59_; Linux has a lot of code in it, but you don't need to care about most of it for most scenarios
23:19 MinceR; i don't think menuconfig is hopeless
23:19 matey; but you don't need to care about most of it for most scenarios <- and this is really true of most software
23:19 MinceR; i think Linux has too much stuff in it for its own good
23:19 matey; i think Linux has too much stuff in it for its own goo <- i agree with this too
23:20 matey; i dont code in c. i had a program in c with some kind of array in it (2d)
23:20 mjg59_; Being able to deal with the entire stack is about being able to work with everything that's relevant to the situation you're managing
23:20 matey; i changed the array which changed a graphical mask and managed to recompile it
23:20 matey; without really knowing c.
23:20 matey; needless to say
23:20 matey; i didnt understand 99% of the code
23:20 matey; and i didnt touch 99% of the ode
23:20 matey; and it was all really a single file.
23:21 mjg59_; Oh yeah the first patches I sent to anything show I really didn't understand C at the time
23:21 mjg59_; I still managed to fix dvdcss so it worked on my DVD drive
23:21 matey; but take the man page of mplayer for example
23:21 matey; im really glad that stuff is there
23:21 MinceR; i meant "being an expert in the entire stack" as being an expert in every element of the stack, to the point of being able to develop it and use it without user documentation
23:21 matey; but because its so much stuff, i have to save it-- then filter out the funny formatting
23:21 matey; then page through it just to get anything from the man page
23:21 MinceR; (as if it was your project)
23:21 matey; other than the basic options, which arent the ones i need a man page for
23:22 matey; i doubt mjg has an "i wrote linux" delusion
23:22 MinceR; i'm not referring to that
23:22 matey; he seems pretty realistic (about this)
23:22 MinceR; i'm referring to the "product" aspect of these projects
23:22 MinceR; something you can hand to a user and expect them to be able to use it
23:23 matey; but the best product wouldnt be a product
23:23 matey; it would be something they can always fix
23:23 matey; and i dont just mean source code
23:23 matey; though that should also be an option
23:23 matey; there are so many things that are broken that i can fix with just grep
23:23 matey; grep
23:23 matey; a tool consisting mostly of options i will never use
23:24 matey; 90% of my uses of group could be replaced with a 3 line python script

23:26 DaemonFC; libdvdcss was one of my favorite programs before other people did the heavy lifting for me.
23:27 matey; people who reject solutions that contain 25-character lines of text will end up with solutions that require 25 libraries, which wont remain maintained or compatible
23:28 matey; the problem with products isnt just the philosophy
23:28 matey; products lead to takeovers
23:28 matey; projects have other shit to do
23:28 MinceR; then we're doomed
23:28 matey; yes
23:28 DaemonFC; The Blu Ray DRM doesn't even work. They used Blu Ray discs as a venus fly trap. The earliest set of demands it made on the user weren't that much worse than DVDs. You could even hook it up through Component Video (analog) and it looked great. Then they started enforcing a flag that said "downgrade this to 540p", and then the connectors were removed. Then you had to buy another player because it stopped agreeing to load new discs. Then once you
23:28 DaemonFC; had the next player, 5 years later, it refused to load new discs and they wanted you to pay for another player.
23:28 matey; as long as we rely on products, we are doomed
23:29 DaemonFC; But there are DVD players from the 90s that still play new releases.
23:29 MinceR; good luck being an expert in a kernel, a userland, a libc, a compiler and a web browser at the same time
23:29 matey; two people who agree on very little have debunked that as a requirement
23:29 MinceR; just to do your banking online
23:29 matey; stallman has never installed gnu/linux

23:30 matey; depends on the services

23:30 matey; if you think im going for man-on-island, off-grid "independence" im not
23:31 matey; computers are good at automation
23:31 matey; if everyone had to write their own kernel, that would be fucking ridiculous
23:31 matey; even if everybody compiled their own kernel, it would have to be REALLY EASY to do

23:31 matey; you dispute it, youre a software engineer
23:31 matey; youre not a shill
23:31 matey; so it cant be THAT easy
23:32 matey; fwiw i never thought it was easy to compile the kernel
23:32 matey; you just support that
23:32 DaemonFC; It wasn't that difficult to compile a kernel the last time I did it.
23:32 matey; point being
