09:18 TR News; Having a very tough time with tuxmachines DB lately. The DB turns 20 in 2 years (same for my personal blog; started with ancient mysql). I think companies need to slow down development and focus on long-term maintenance so that sites, for instance (DB, OS, CMS, P/L), can go on for decades without things getting long in the tooth. There's financial incentive to break stuff and then sell "support" or "upgrades".

09:53 TR News; Now that COVID-19 is surging worldwide it's OK to condemn the response/strategy, which was short-sighted, 'short term', self-serving. Vaccines are good, but these ones were rushed, monopolised with patents (graft; making the rich a lot richer) and isolation/home-working almost abandoned to appease the estate tycoons. Now we pay the price.

15:30 matey; microsoft threatened organisations!
15:30 matey; As BleepingComputer reports (oh well it must be true) Raspberry Robin is being spread via infected USB devices. It requires a user to insert the USB device and click a malicious .LNK file
15:31 matey; thats a "worm"?
15:31 matey; it sounds very trojany in nature...

15:33 matey; A connection is then established with a command and control server using a short URL, and if successfuly, a number of malicious DLLs are downloaded and installed. <- this is a trojan downloader, not a worm

21:04 techrights_guest|83; This is true. I find they also have expectations that are out of touch with reality. for instance they think that moving from microsoft to linux they will indeed just move over . and have no work to do. nothing to learn. they expect the smartphone i think and default to the least amount of mental power they must use in order to use said thing.
21:04 techrights_guest|83; I read a article some years ago now that resonates with me more now than ever. 2012. a blog post titled no one can use a computer. in the early days it was something ike 25% of the popuation had a home computer, and 95% of the 25% were proficent. the numbers in 2012 were somewhere around 90% of households had computers, but 25% were proficent.
21:04 techrights_guest|83; think there will be a shift back to that down the road here.
21:04 schestowitz[TR]; DaemonFC: I used to work there
21:05 schestowitz[TR]; techrights_guest|83: now many homes do not have computers
21:05 schestowitz[TR]; they have a palm-sized spying machine
21:05 schestowitz[TR]; which they call a "phone"
21:05 techrights_guest|83; yes.
21:06 schestowitz[TR]; they think it's an effective and efficient tool for getting stuff done
21:06 techrights_guest|83; I liked the video on the phones concerning the basebands
21:06 techrights_guest|83; they all have basebands, and when that can be modified it will liberate the phones
21:06 techrights_guest|83; like you said ong way off
21:06 techrights_guest|83; long way off
21:07 schestowitz[TR]; it's not just that
21:07 schestowitz[TR]; you need to triangulate

21:08 schestowitz[TR]; many laptops too are trying to connect to wifi "hotspots" nearby
21:08 schestowitz[TR]; and the ISPs likely collect this data
21:08 techrights_guest|83; Yes. they do. I have a hadrware switch I keep off.
21:08 schestowitz[TR]; BT is short range
21:08 schestowitz[TR]; bluetooth
21:08 schestowitz[TR]; not british telecom
21:08 techrights_guest|83; we have BT removed from our hardware.
21:08 techrights_guest|83; we took the card out
21:09 schestowitz[TR]; it's mostly useless
21:09 schestowitz[TR]; passing signals without wires
21:09 schestowitz[TR]; my palm PDA still has IR
21:09 schestowitz[TR]; I barely use it
21:09 techrights_guest|83; it is. it wasnt any good for anything reay sow and laggy in the early days
21:09 techrights_guest|83; uses aot of power
21:09 schestowitz[TR]; my other palm PDA is barely functional any longer
21:09 techrights_guest|83; and broadcasts
21:09 schestowitz[TR]; phones used to last a week
21:09 schestowitz[TR]; no charge
21:09 schestowitz[TR]; on battery
21:09 schestowitz[TR]; bulky batteries, but still
21:09 techrights_guest|83; yes.

21:13 techrights_guest|83; we have been 5 years now smartphone free. we dont take phones in stores or with us anywhere. it is interesting to watch the zombies everywhere we go. we watch them cross in crosswalks staring at the screen nearly getting hit by vehicles.

21:30 DaemonFC; No matter how you slice it, they could theoretically solve 100% of 2 out of 3 problems somehow (which is also impossible, you know, but just for argument) and still be pulling guns off of murder scenes statewide, mostly in Chicago, for infinity.
21:31 DaemonFC; So gun control is illogical because you only disarm the people who care.
21:31 DaemonFC; Who are also about 0.1% of the problem eventually.
21:31 schestowitz[TR]; that's just a dump idiom
21:31 schestowitz[TR]; sounds superficially true
21:31 schestowitz[TR]; *dumb
21:31 DaemonFC; If a person cares about a felony for having a gun, then they won't have one, but those aren't the people who will ultimately murder a person with the gun.
21:32 schestowitz[TR]; cool-down period for purchases is one way to tackle one type of problem
21:32 DaemonFC; The people who don't care it's a felony and who do it anyway are the problem, but since it doesn't work, what's the point of restraining the people who are not the problem?
21:32 schestowitz[TR]; but people can easy borrow or buy from a peer
21:32 schestowitz[TR]; not a shop
21:33 DaemonFC; All gun control does is shift gun ownership away from people who aren't criminals, and towards the criminals, and it emboldens the criminals because they know most of their victims won't be able to fight back.
21:33 DaemonFC; Want to do a mass shooting? Do it in a gun free zone in a state with the FOID Act.
21:33 schestowitz[TR]; rhetoric

21:36 schestowitz[TR]; the mass shootings happen every day
21:36 schestowitz[TR]; iirc, fbi now defined that as >=3 victims
21:36 DaemonFC; That's why when we say gun control is stupid, we say it like this.... "When seconds count, the police are only an hour away.".
21:36 schestowitz[TR]; *defines
21:36 schestowitz[TR]; but you only hear about the worst of the worst

21:37 DaemonFC; Good luck with that!
21:37 DaemonFC; Better not have a FOID card when they show up. They may arrest the victim.
21:37 schestowitz[TR]; then fewer will be evil enough to mass-murder strangers
21:38 schestowitz[TR]; biab
21:38 schestowitz[TR]; it's off topic anyway
21:38 DaemonFC; Like that Navy veteran who started carrying. He had a FOID card but not a CCL. He had a CCL, but he said it cost too much to keep renewing, so he just kept the guns in his house and had a FOID card. Then he had to do UberEats because of the shitty economy, and he kept getting approached and harassed by Chicago street criminals.
21:38 DaemonFC; So he started carrying again with a FOID but no CCL.
21:39 DaemonFC; When he got pulled over for speeding, he pulled out his driver's license. His FOID was behind the license. The cop saw the FOID and asked if he had a gun in the car.
