how to find more music online

2022-03-06

without needing any existing friendships or connections to people. if you do have some, you can ask them about music.

feel free to ignore methods if you don't like the services used in them.

  1. search up a genre you like on youtube, any other streaming platform, or soulseek

you will find playlists, mixes, or collections of songs someone likes from that genre, and you can listen to them. you can also just type in a random word, game, (usually) song name, lyric etc. and find playlists that way.

  1. use auto-generated or officially curated mixes and song radios from streaming platforms

chances are, you'll find something you like. but it might also be just what you already hear, based on the algorithm quality. spotify also has a discover weekly playlist based off your tastes, with many new artists and unknown songs from artists you know.

  1. follow youtube recommendations and related artists

when youtube recommends a song or album, it'll recommend countless more if you open the video, and you can collect them into a list or listen to them and get more songs and albums. on spotify and other platforms, there's a related artist list, and you can just click artists and find even more related ones.

  1. check out the accounts who made the playlists/videos from #1 and #3

usually, they'll have more playlists, outside of the genre you searched, and other songs and albums. soulseek users especially have enormous music collections. you can also try to see if musicians you like have playlists.

  1. use gnoosic or music map

you can type in artists you like and find many related ones. for gnoosic, you might know some of the artists it gives you, but it usually goes into obscure artists you might not know. for music map, you can easily branch into new territory if you continue clicking on the artists, generating more lists of artists to hear.

  1. use every noise

you can quickly scan thousands of fun and bizarre genres. you can also search up artists, click their genre, and find more artists. genres also have autogenerated "the sound of [genre]" playlists with many songs from different artists in the genre. sidenote: you can find age, gender, and country demographics for genres if you're curious about that.

  1. use magicplaylist

you type in a song, set some parameters, and get a list of mostly related songs. you can just keep the song names if you don't use spotify.

=> https://magicplaylist.co/

  1. use rateyourmusic and albumoftheyear

there are top charts you can additionally filter by year and genre. there's also popular and new releases you can check out. there's also user-made lists of albums, which you can find in the sidebar or under album pages (just search an album you like and you can find some lists), and reviews too. you can then explore users from lists and reviews to find more music, in more lists, hundreds or thousands of album ratings, and reviews.

=> https://www.albumoftheyear.org/

  1. join the music server portal

there are countless record label, artist, and genre servers shared here where you can then discuss music with other people or search for links or "youtube" and whatnot after you join. warning: there are a few drama-stirring, slur-spamming users in this discord that join some of the shared discords. true for most communities, but the ones on here are loud.

  1. browse subreddits and music forums

there's r/listentothis, r/ifyoulikeblank, r/lastfm, genre-specific, and more music discovery subreddits. reddit searching of an artist you like can also work, inside r/ifyoulikeblank and probably outside, at the very least to find more music subreddits. also, you can post in r/ifyoulikeblank to get recs. you can search up "music forums" with or without genres and browse them.

  1. use last.fm

along with its recommendation algorithm, last.fm has a "neighbors" tab in your profile where you can find more people that listen to a lot of what you do, and check out their libraries. they'll have artists you don't listen to and you can check them out. this requires you to have used last.fm for at least a day though.

if you don't already use it, you can still check out artist pages, where there's a top listeners section, even if they only have 4 listeners. you can browse those profiles for more artists. you can also type in https://www.last.fm/user/ with a random word or name and find users with a big library through that.

  1. play rhythm games

there's lunatic rave 2, beat saber, spin rhythm xd, quaver, clone hero, geometry dash, osu, and more. in these, users can make their own levels with custom songs. you can browse for songs, download their levels, and see if you enjoy them.

there's also rhythm games without (unmodded) custom levels, but they usually still have some good music worth discovering.

  1. discover other projects of artists you like

this includes other current aliases and bands, previous ones, and albums and singles the artist collaborated on or produced. somewhat related is musicians the artist has performed or toured with. you can find this info on wikipedia, rym, and just floating around in various websites, possibly accessible through a search engine but sometimes, this info is only shared in a discord.

  1. search up a musician you like on gemini

  1. look into record labels, venues, and radio stations

early in quarantine, there were a ton of free online music festivals like nether meant and limp pumpo rave, but i haven't seen much these days, other than secret sky. probably wouldn't be that hard to find them though. if you look into which venues your favorite artists perform at, and what label(s) they're on, you will find lists of a ton of artists on their websites and wikipedia. many college and internet radio stations play a ton of good artists. my favorite is datafruits.fm.

=> https://datafruits.fm/

i don't remember what song i was playing when i started writing, but i do remember listening to: julie - starjump, qubinoix - canary, elvis costello & the attractions - human touch, slow gherkin - shed some skin, girlsareshort - mississauga theme (where my astrobotany plant name comes from), girlsareshort - pinacolada, girlsareshort - sunshine, velódromo - gémini, car seat headrest - cute thing, coolhand jax - superstar baby, car seat headrest - beach life-in-death, citrobal - celluloid, jeff rosenstock - f a m e, glass beach - dallas, julie - lochness, tyler, the creator - gone, gone / thank you, the scary jokes - blood from the concrete (2021 mix), sweet trip - darkness, and so i watch you from afar - iii lung, lake love - telling time, jeff rosenstock - yr throat
