Ralph Bunche was the grandson of a freed slave. He served in the Office of Strategic Services in WW2. Bunche & his team were instrumental in providing intelligence used in Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of North Africa in Nov 1942.

He was the first Black person to be awarded a Nobel prize. Ebony magazine proclaimed him perhaps the most influential African American of the first half of the 20th century
