Daniel, the man behind Pixelfed and Loops, admitted that he actually has a full time job. That means that these services along with lots of other stuff, which he provides, is just a hobby project.
Please let that sink in. A single man's hobby project, with some but not very much help, is succeeding in beating billion dollar companies for users, in the hundreds of thousands.
