Still listening to Cracking the Nazi Code, a book about the Canadian spy Winthrop Bell, on the same day as Trump is announcing his tariffs. The two men could not be more different:
One was humble, charming, and eloquent.
One was hard working, self-sacrificing, and empathic.
One had a keen intellect, which he used to craft forceful rhetoric to try and prevent war, murder, and death.
One cared deeply about the truth, and believed in the power of truth to rescue ourselves from our worst impulses.
One was well liked and deeply respected by those around him.
In short, I would say that Bell demonstrated the best of Canadian values, and Trump reflects the worst of American ones.
