Van començar a viure amb els búfals d'aigua d'Àfrica, després van acompanyar animals domèstics, especialment les vaques i bous, als quals desparasita --d'aquí el seu nom-- i aprofita els insectes i animalets que aixequen quan es desplacen pels camps.
